Someone, anyone My poor Baxter is blind, and just today started yelping violently when I would put him down. I called the 24hr animal hospital and the doctor only told me he was probably just trying to get used to not seeing anything and that he might see nothing but black right now, he doesn't know up from down...and to just hold him until he calms down, and try to move him beside me, then gradually move further from him. But, right now he's laying down in my lap. He refuses to move. I move him, he cries like he's dying and runs back into my lap! Could this be he's scared, and is just sticking to what he knows and feels secure around? Any ideas? |
I am so sorry for Baxter and you. When was the last time he saw the doctor for his glaucoma? Is there any possibility that he could be in pain from this condition? I don't mean to upset you, but it seems unusual that he would start yelping today. If this is the case, perhaps you could try tethering him to you in the house for awhile. Talk to him a lot so that he can follow your voice. Everything I have read says dogs adjust amazingly well to blindness. Have you read Paris' blog here about blindness? If you have not, let me know and I will find the link for you. Sending prayers for Baxter and you. |
He went today to see if his eye drops were doing anything for him and his doctor said he looked great! and that he could tell he was going to adjust just fine, but once we got home he freaked out, we won't walk anywhere, he just sits and cries very loudly. I'm probably going to have to take him in tomorrow to have him checked out, to see if he's in pain, I feel so useless I wish there were someway he could just say whats wrong lol Thanks for the prayers! |
The fact that you saw the doctor just today makes me feel better for you and your little guy. It probably is "just" fear then, but I would give the doc a call in the morning and let him know what is happening. I pray Baxter is doing better by tomorrow. Yes, if only they could tell us what is wrong! That would be so helpful. |

I'm sorry that you and Baxter are going thru this. It sounds as though he may be afraid of having something else done to him. Maybe the eye drops cause some fear in him. ?? Just hold him close to you and hopefully he will start to calm down and realize that you are right there with him. |

Baxter Poor little guy. I did not read from your post what was wrong with his eye to cause blindness and how long he has had the condition?? If it is glaucoma as Maximo states, then he may well get pain if the optic nerve gets damaged. Are the drops for eye pressure reduction, and what is the current pressure? Also I wonder if Vets really know what a dog feels or if a condition causes pain or not? Soon after my dog had reduction in vision from cataracts, he became aggressive - but who knows if the lack of vision caused it??? If they lose a sense it would not be surprising if they become anxious and insecure in the new strange environment. Lets hope the Vet visit will help poor Baxter as he is obviously in distress. If only they could talk to tell us what is bothering them!!! I feel for you and Baxter and hope he feels better soon and you can be at peace then too. Prayer and good wishes. |
is there anyway you can make baxter a little play pen so he knows where everything is and everything feels the same for him at all times. If he is blind and were to stay that way, if he felt comfortable in his own little space he wouldn't freak out as you say. You could make him a potty corner, and sleep corner , and a toy corner, this would help him alot. All dogs blind or not have to have security and the same routine daily or they tend to be upset and sick alot, maybe this will work for you..... |
My old pup Cammie went blind from Cushings disease and at first she was very fearful. She didn't cry, but she always wanted to be by our side. If Baxter has just recently gone from being able to see a little to complete blackness, then he's probably terrified. It would be like trying to describe to a baby why she can't see her mom anymore. Thankfully, Baxter can still smell you and know your that in the sense for comfort. I agree with the others, alert your vet with what's going on and check to make sure nothing else, physically, is wrong. And just try to comfort him the best that you can. Cammie loved when we had a heating pad or hot water bottle on her belly and she laid with us. It was the little things that seemed most comforting. |
Thanks everyone for the replies, It's been a couple days since, and he's dooing 125% better! He's moving around, getting used to his surroundings and not being as clingy! He's doing really good at following me around everywhere I go, it amazes me that he is able to follow me around still! He's still bumping into everything and it still makes me want to cry every single time, but I'm sure astim egoes on I'll get used to the fact that he can't see anymore...He's probably more used to it than I am. I can tell that the aspirin is helping with his pain and the eye drop as well! vet was right, he's going to be just fine! |

So glad he is doing better. Can you imagine the fear they feel? It must be terrifing. TIna does good as long as I don't change anything around. Sometimes she will shake and I just pick her up and cover her with a baby blanket and rock her. I talk to her or sing to her and it calms her down. I know what you are going through and its hard. All we can do is just love them and I try not to stress her out even when she has to take a bath etc. |
