Has anyone had any experience with the antibiotic Cephalexin? Toby has had some small bumps all along his spine for a few weeks. They don't itch and they weren't red but they would show up in a spot, get bumpy and then go away and show up in another spot. So I took him to the vet yesterday and came to the conclusion that he was probably allergic to the flea/tick medicine I put on him (can't remember what it was-but it was OTC stuff). I've used it before and it never bothered him but I don't think we ever used a whole tube and we did this past month because of all the rain we've had and were going to be camping more. Vet said he had a slight staff infection (not the contagious type) so she put him on Cephalexin. He is to get a whole capsule (250 mg) three times a day. I started him on it last night and a few hours after I gave it to him he threw up. I gave it to him this morning and he did fine. I gave it to him after dinner tonight and again after a couple hours he threw up. I'm thinking his little tummy can't handle it. His bumps are already disappearing and not spreading. I don't think I will give him any more of the Cephalexin until I talk to the vet Monday since it seems to upset his tummy. Have any of you used it and had to switch to something different? |
GI discomfort is a common problem with cephalexin. I would hold off giving it and ask the vet for a different medication. Some pups can handle it, some cannot. Clearly Toby cannot! :) The staph infection is not going to be an issue until you can change meds. |
Thanks Linda! I will definitely be changing his meds. He must have a sensitive little tummy for such a ruff and tuff guy (at least he thinks he is.) |

Ellie can't take the Cephalosporins either for that reason. Next time you have to give an antibio, I'd give it with a meal. Your pup will be fine without it this weekend. |
Thanks Crystal. I gave it to him about an hour after he ate. I put the capsule in a pill pocket and he gobbled it right down. I don't know who invented those pill pockets but they are a lifesaver for me. |
I started Toby on Clavamox last night and he is doing great on it! Hopefully all the little bumps on his back and the staff infection will go away in the next seven days. No more puke to clean up (or watch him eat EWWWWWWWWWWW.) |
Clavamox is good for skin infections! I am sure he will be just fine! :) Glad his tummy is better. |
