will NOT stop itching!!! Kaos has NOT stopped itching the last two days. He's up to date on his flea medicine, and I checked him...nothing. (he had twice before...very easily visible in his coat) Idk allergies maybe? He's never itched this ever before, and there has been no changes at home. I'm going to take him to the vet on Friday if he doesn't let up; but is there anything I can do to help him feel better the next two days? |
My Wheaten terrier has lots of allergy issues. I put her in the tub and rinse her with clear water for quite a while, I use a handheld shower spray. It seems to give her a few hours of relief and if she has gotten into any grass (fertilizer/ bug killer) on her paws it clears that out. I am very careful with her shampoos and rinsing too! (only natural- no sulphates) |

It could be many things, and the most common is food allergy. Mine are allergic to poultry and fish, and will break out with itchy bumps all over and lick and chew on their toes. I home cook, so I know exactly what they are eating. They are doing perfect on what I feed them, so if I ever add a new food and they start itching, I'll know what caused it. Maybe give your baby a bath in an oatmeal based shampoo. At one time when two of my girls were so full of bumps and itched like crazy, I used Head and Shoulders on them while I was figuring out what was causing it, and it worked really well at keeping them from itching so much. |
Sometimes if a flea bites them it will set off that kind of reaction....especially if it seems to be focused in one area. Even if you use a flea preventative, sometimes they still can be bitten by a flea. Flea allergy is awful. I have one pup who has a terrible allergy to flea bites and she has to have a cortisone injection if it starts up with her. |
His diet hasn't changed at all, and he has had fleas in the past and never had a reaction. He's chewing on his arms, legs, scratching his neck, and now licking his boy "stuff" raw. :eek: I wish work paid me sooner, this is stressing me out. :( |

My Peek A Boo had mites, Revolution took care of them. His skin on his tummy and privates looked like elephant skin... really rough and bumpy, and I noticed tiny white flakes all around the outermost edges of his ears. He itched so bad he couldn't sleep for 3 days. |
have you tried benadyrl before, could he have gotten into anything, any new cleaners or anything in the house, chester is a allergic dog as well, if you try benadryl and it helps it is not food related |
We have to join the group with itching - she is driving me nuts so it has to be miserable for her. I did give her 1/3 tsp Childrens Benadryl which makes her sleepy, but she does not scratch. She isn't drugged sleepy, she will just take a normal doggie nap and if I move, then she is up and moving too. However, she starts scratching the second she wakes up. Chestermama mentioned above if benadryl helped it wasn't food allergy; what suggestions or ideas do you have? I bought an Oatmeal Shampoo & Rinse for her and have been using it since June. When this happened in June, I had the groomer give her an oatmeal bath and the problem went away until now. Just a note, the product I purchased makes her hair impossible to manage, she looks like a wild child it is so fly-away :). The yorkie that is the everything in my life is Makayley, 5 years old, and 4 lbs with long hair. |
My girl Bratt has been doing this for the past 7-10 days. Nothing helped her & we tried medicated shampoo, Revolution, liquid Benadryl, antibiotics (in case it was a skin infection) & she still itched constantly - she even scratched a small area bald under her eye. Hubby took her to the vet this morning for me (his day off) & the vet said it's a bad time of the year right now & a lot of dogs are having issues with Ragweed & itching. My vet gave her an injection of steroids & it's been a miracle. Hubby said the itching was gone by noon & she is finally getting to rest & relax. I wish we had taken her sooner so that she was able to get this relief, ask your vet about a steroid shot and/or pills to help calm down any allergic reactions. I'm glad he gave her a shot - it worked quickly and was so worth the price of the vet visit & medication. Good luck with your little one - I hope your baby gets relief soon. Teresa |
Princess had been itching something terrible. We went to the vet & she thinks it seems to be environmental allergies & ragweed is bad here right now. She gave her prednisone & she's already scratching a lot less. Hope these pups can find some relief soon, it has to be terrible to itch that bad! |
Thanks for your responses. It sounds like many of our children are having allergy problems. A trip to the vet will be next as this has to be miserable for her. |
Hello there, chester is a very itchy dog sometimes enviromental allergies, salmon oil or anything like that helps, an antiinflammatory and it is good for them and their coat. I use no plug in air freshners, no powder in the carpet or no sprays. I use all free and clear laundry soap and no dryer sheets for any of his bedding and such and an extra rinse. You can rinse them off with warm water and that mey help and you can use 50/50 mix apple cider vinegar and water if their is no open spots or sores. He has had 2 shots before and if you have too it makes them urinate alot, trust me I know. I also keep my condo clean amd wipe off their feet after being outside especially when the grass is damp |
Jack doing the same thing. I did take him to vet, she thinks its allergies. Put him on claratin 1/2 tablet daily. I haven't given him any yet. Don't like to give meds if not necessary. I am going to get the baby formula liquid clartin and give that. I read somewhere to take a wet rag and wipe the area. That does help. I also started bathing more often also. At first I thought it was a nervous thing cause it was basically licking the front paws. I am still not sure it doesn't have something to do with that. And to note to everyone on the Benadryl The pharmacist told me they recalled that, not sure if it was just the baby formula. |
