Magnus had a traumatic accident - spinal injury C4 and C5 out of alignment
 

Hello All,
This is my first time on here, although I have been here reading for quite some time. My little guy and I were playing and we must have been playing too rough. He yelped and went down immediately and just stayed there. He started to drool excessively and I immediately took him to the vet.

At the vet, they took some xrays and his C4 is out of alignment. He is in a neck brace and I cannot see the neurologist until Monday morning (another 13 hours from now, about 48 hours after the injury). I feel so helpless and have cried non-stop. When the accident first happened, he was only able to move his back legs, his front legs were limp. He would only recoil them if you did the pain test. It has now been 36 hours and he has regained use of his front paws but still cannot sit up on his own. He moves like a newborn pup learning how to move for the first time. He can move his front paws but not very well. I have him crated to try to keep him still. He tries to re-position himself constantly and its very clumsy.

Has anyone experienced anything like this with their yorkie. Any advice on what to do to get the best outcome possible would be greatly appreciated.

My Yorkie also has a disc issue although she never had any problems walking and has "healed" as much as is possible.

My understanding is that if there is reduced limb function, it is VERY important to get an assessment by a surgeon (and possibly go to surgery) within about a day. I think you have done a great job so far. I'd be calling the specialty hospitals in your state that have an emergency dept and a neuro on staff so that your pup can be assessed tonight. If you have already talked to the neuro, then all you can do is wait.

Thank you for your reply. Did your little one get back to 100%? The neurologist that I was referred too can't see him until Monday morning. I've done the best I can with pain meds and keeping him still.

The good thing about using a neuro that works at a specialty hospital with an ER is that the dog gets assessed by ER staff and if they feel like surgery has to be done immediately, the neuro is called in (appointment or not).

My pup didn't lose any function at all, but yes, she has appeared perfectly normal for months now. Her pain was able to be managed (thank God for gabapentin) and she had no limb issues, so no surgery was needed.
