Anal Glands question I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question. My vet was talking to me about Tila's anal glands, she been having problems with them. She was talking to me about putting Tila under sedation to flush them and applying an antibiotic inside. Has anyone ever had this done? Or know more about it? Thanks. |
If there is an abscess issue or infection, then they would need to be emptied and she would needed something injected. May follow up with oral antibiotics. Depends how much your vet wants to do back there and their philosophy. My vet doesn't sedate for anals unless restraining isn't working. She'd rather a dog be in pain for a couple minutes than putting them in danger with sedation. However, this is only a call your vet can make. If my dog had a mild anal issue, they would be taken care of with restraint only if possible, but that is me. I think you need to go with what your vet is saying if you trust them. |
Tila had a bad anal infection a little while ago, there wasn't an abscess and they didn't rupture. She was put on two antibiotics and it cleared up. The vet wanted to see her in 6 to 8 weeks to recheck to make sure there wasn't any problems and everything was okay. I took her in last week however and she has an infection again. She is on two antibiotics again, she said it may take three rounds of antibiotics to clear it. She also talked to me about removal if she continues to have problems, but she said that the flushing and inner antibiotics was something we could do. I don't know why Tila is having problems with her glands. |
Often with problem anals it works best to use oral antibiotics & empty the anals every 2 to 3 days for a week. They tend to fill rite back up if there is an infection then they finish the meds but the anals are full again so infection comes rite back . |
