I don't know what's wrong!!! Hi, I'm new to this site but I have to ask an important question. My Yorkie is 4 years old and over the last 2 weeks has been showing signs that he is not seeing things correctly. Sometimes he'll run into things and when I give him a treat or anything it's like he can't see it and has to sniff around to find it. I know that dogs can get cataracts but I don't see anything wrong or different with his eyes. The real emergency is that just this afternoon my Yorkie started limping around funny and wouldn't use his front right leg. While he was doing this he started foaming at the mouth. I think it might have been a seizure, but I don't know if I should take him in anywhere to get checked out or if he'll be okay. If anyone can help me with these two problems I would be very grateful. Thanks so much!!!!!!!! |
Go to your vet now... |
Take him in ASAP! he needs to be seen by a vet. |
Vet immediately (today) for an exam and bloodwork. Even without the latest issue, not seeing things correctly is also an emergency.. |
Please take him to the vet, something worse can happen if you wait. |
I agree with everyone go to the vet now. Don't mess around with these warning signs. Please keep us posted on what you find out |
Ok, so I took all of your advice and took him into the vet today. He said that it is probably a liver shunt, which means that his food is not getting digested properly and the proteins are turning to ammonia and getting into his brain. This is causing the seizures and the eyesight issues. :( We are going back in tomorrow to run some tests and see what we can do about helping him out. Thank you so much for all of your replies. I\'m really glad we took him in. |
I am so sorry that your baby is going through this. Very good thing you got into the vet today. Update us tomorrow when you can. |
I hope your pup gets better soon. Good for you acting quickly and getting him to the vet. |
Hope things are going well at the vet today. |
I\'m so sorry your baby got diagnosed with possible liver shunt. It\'s really good that you caught it when you did. Please don\'t think that liver shunt = death sentence. It does not. With the proper treatment, dogs with liver shunts, can lead very normal lives. Many of us on this forum have yorkies with liver shunts or MVD - multiple internal shunting. Somtimes surgery is required; sometimes medication as well; or sometimes just a diet change and medication as needed. So don\'t give up. Please keep us posted on how things are going. |
Praying your baby will be ok. |
So glad you took him in and got help for him. Praying he will be okay. They can\'t speak for themselves and we have to help them the best we can. |
Please also talk to your vet about AAI, Chiari & GME. Limping & vision loss are not usually symptoms of Liver shunt but are symptoms of the other things that I mentioned. I will be Praying for your baby. |
So sorry your baby is going through this. Please keep us posted as to how he is doing. |
