Bladder Stone Removal Surgery Last Thursday
 

Maddie had a pretty large stone removed thursday (about 2cm). She is on tramadol 3x a day and clavamox. The vet made it seem like she would pretty much back to her normal self by now. Yesterday she starting throwing up and shaking. The vet thought she threw up from the antibiotic and not having anything in her stomach and just being in so much pain. I took her in and they gave her some morphine and rimadyl (sp?). After the morphine injection she starting acting really goofy. The vet said she was "high as a kite". They kept her at the office for a few hours and did some x-rays of her lungs and such to make sure that she wasn't having any breathing problems. When I picked her up she said that she should be feeling much better today. Problem is, she is such a zombie. She just lays there. If I call her name she will move her eyes to look at me but that is it. I carried her outside this morning and she peed and carried her back in and she just stood there for about 10 minutes and finally laid back down. She won't eat her normal food so I am giving her chicken and rice. I called the vet again and she said that some dogs just take longer to heal.

My question is, did anyone else have this problem with their dog after this surgery? I just hate to see her laying there doing nothing, never moving. Do you think it is normal for her to be that zonked out? I did a search for bladder stones and some posts made it sound like their dogs were back to normal the next day :confused: I guess I am just looking for some reassurance. Thanks..I just wish I could trade places with her!

Gracie had surgery a few weeks ago and the vet sent her home with Tramadol. She said it would pretty much knock her out for a few hours. I only gave her 1 and it did indeed zonk her and she didn't move. Gracie was not interested in eating until the day after her surgery and she did have an upset tummy too. My vet said it was normal.

Tramadol can make them feel weird and tired, but it should not be doing what it is doing. I wonder about the morphine? And the Tramadol dose? If she is barely moving, then the vet should know about that asap.

I had a foster who had several large bladder stones removed. She was sent home with the same meds but indeed she did start to act fine the day after. I think perhaps the vet gave too strong a dose? I would call them again, or get a 2nd opinion.

Could be the meds are too much. Paris was knocked out by his meds also but I reduced the pain meds in half and he did much better.

My hb has kidney stones and it's very painful, so I can only imagine what Maddie has been going through.

May I ask, what were the signs on Maddie that led to discovering the bladder stones? My boy goes wee-wee every 1-2 hours on some days and I was wondering 'what's up with that?'

FINALLY, Maddie is back to her old self again. The vet said she is just very sensitive to meds and anesthesia (which I can agree with because one time she needed steriods and oh boy did that girl eat and drink up a storm!).

To answer the question of why we thought she had a problem...she was peeing ALL THE TIME. We put a potty pad down at night so she doesn't wake us up and we were noticing that instead of one or two spots, there were 3+ every night. She was even making little puddles on the carpet. We took her to the vet and they tested her pee and she had bacteria in her urine. They sent us home with 7 days of antibiotics. After a week, she still wasn't better and we noticed little orange spots on her potty pad. We took her back to the vet and they said that it could be a couple of different things and suggested an x-ray for bladder stones. They took us in to look at the x-ray and BOOM! I thought I was look at an organ or something because it was a huge white thing in the middle of her tummy and then they said no that was a stone! I was in shock!

So, long story short...a LOT of peeing, accidents, and when she did pee she would squat for a long time. We noticed her peeing more often for a few weeks and just thought she was drinking more. I wish we wouldn't have waited. I would suggest taking your baby in ASAP. I wish we did. Hope everything is ok!

Glad to hear she is doing better. She may be peeing frequently still bc now it doesn't hurt! I did notice that with my foster. So I would take her out every hour or two just to see if she wanted to go. She didn't get pee pads. Hope she continues to recover! :)
