idiopathic epilepsy. hi i have a four year old male yorkie thats always been healthy his up to date with injections, worming and flea treatment. he weighs a healthy 9lb today he was fine went out for his normal walk with our other two yorkies after being in for 10 mins i thought he looked odd so i picked him up then 10 mins later he went stiff an had a vacant look and was not responding to us, we took him straight to the vets who put us in a dark room and the did blood tests and spoke about idiopathic epilepsy. we was allowed home and then a few hours later vet rang to say blood test were all clear so looks like it might be idiopathic epilepsy. i was wondering if anyone elses dog suffered with these and what should i be doing to ease the syptoms if there is going to be any sorry posts a bit long but as you can imagine we are a bit shocked at the moment |
My Sammy had seizures. He was put on phenobarbital and that didn't help too much. Then KBR was added (once a day). Once we got the levels of medicine good, he was seizure free for 9 years. It's a very scary thing to see when they have a seizure and you feel so helpless. Good luck! |
thank you glad sammy was seizure free for so long and i agree very scary stuff |
A few of us have dogs with idiopathic epilepsy, myself included. A dog can only be given this diagnosis when everything else is ruled out. I don't believe that blood work alone can determine that. Max went through blood work and many neurological tests including an MRI and spinal tap. It was only then that he could be diagnosed as having idiopathic epilepsy. With that being said he takes phenobarbital on a daily basis and is doing quite well. |
thank you alldogboots but i think vets over here are not as good as your vets, i think they just gave the seizure a name to keep me calm, they are not suggesting any medication as yet but are just making me aware of a cause that it might be. they are advising if rocky as more then three seizures a day or has more then four seizures in as many days then they might suggest tablets. yesterday i was in a flap and i guess i was just looking for reassurance that i was not going to lose him. after a worrying night of not a lot of sleep i have tried to look it another way who knows if he will have any more seiures i really hope not i waited 26 years for my little man but if he does we will get him the best treatment that we can |
