Maxi ate sand... really sick now Maxi was playing in a sandbox yesterday and apparently ate a lot of sand. Unfortunately, my husband and I had to go to a party and my parents were watching him, so I am not sure exactly how much sand he ate. My mom said that once they came inside (we live in NY and its been around 100 here lately) he was really hot and tired and took a nap when he suddenly woke up and started shaking for about 45 mins. He finally stopped and then ate dinner like normal. When got home and took him and then that evening he pooped and it was all very loose stool and sand clumps. After this he seemed really tired and went to sleep. Woke up the next morning, and he was his normal self, ate all his food and had some water. No poop yet this morning but then he got really tired again and is napping now. Is he okay? Do you think all the sand came out or might there be more? Are they usually this tired after something like this? I am so worried about him. Thank you for any advice! |
Maxi needs to be seen by your vet today. Eating sand is not a good thing and being lethargic is very concerning. |

Vet as that sand can block G-I tract and cause kinks in it which lead to worse from what I've heard about sand eating. I'll be hoping it is not anywhere near that bad with your baby and all will be fine after a check up and maybe some medication. |
I personally have not had this happen but I do remember someone else posting about it previously. It was probably last year if I am remembering correctly. Did you try doing a search? |

So I just got off the phone with my vet and she said that sine he ate and drank water and already had a bowel movement that got rid of some sand, to basically just watch him and make sure he keeps eating and drinking water. She said that if he contiunes to be lethargic and stop eating and or pooping to bring him in but she said that since we dont know how much sand he ate, to just watch him for another day or so and if this continues to bring him in. She said that he is probably really irrated ... Im still so worried though :( |
I'd be ready to take him to the vet if ANYthing looked funny. Watch gums, sleeping habits, pooping/peeing, eating, mood, drinking - if seems out of the ordinary, just go and ask your questions there at the vet. Better to waste the money of visit than put your baby in any jeopardy. |

I still say take him in, there is so much stuff in sand that could be stuck in his tummy right now. Cats poop in sand (which is like fillet Mignon for doggies *yuck!) including stray cats who haven't been treated for parasites or given vaccinations. Other animals may have relieved themselves in that sand box, along with children. If your vet doesn't want to see her, or doesn't have anything available for today, check around with other vets. The earlier you catch things the cheaper they'll be to treat. |
I think the heat is adding to the problem...I would not take him outside for no more then a few mins...too many dogs are having heat strokes. |

We had a sandbox in our yard when my son was small and he got ringworm. If it is outside cats will use it for a litter box and you would never know. I not sure if this can happen with a dog. Hope he feels better. |

Just a little update Maxi has been doing better, he is playing and running around outside. My parents came and he is super excited to see them. He does not appear to be in any pain, he is running around like his usual self now. No poop yet though. Still keeping an eye out on this. |
