I broke my leg! So my little Tibbers decited he was gonna be a supper dog and take a nose dive off my cousins 14foot high porch....thank God above he just broke his leg! The vet put him to sleep and re-set it, but now says I have to keep him cooped up for 4-6 weeks.....and at 15 weeks it is proving to be imposible......any advice on how to keep him off of it? |
I have no advice but I will be praying he heals quick. Send a message to Steve, username shodanusmc, his puppy broke his legs months ago and he could give you great advice. I don't think the cast sloed the puppy down much. Prayers are with you. |
Yeah Tibbs acts like its not even there! |
Oh, how sad for the little guy :( I pray the all goes well with the healing. I can only imagine how hard it is to keep him off it, but I'm sure the vet wants the bone to heal in alignment. Did vet want him crated for the duration or did they say he could move around with the cast? Hugs ))) to your sweet baby. |
I usually can keep my Tibbe quiet if I get him in my lap or next to me on the couch. He's good as long as he's got TV to watch! I hope your little Tibber's(aren't their names so similar) heals very quickly and can manage his down time without both of you going crazy. You have to watch these little dogs like a hawk, don't you? |
Yeah he wants him crated :( I've been doing a lot of holding! At night time it is horrible my husband has a no dog in the bed rule and Tibbs just cries and cries he has never even stepped in his crate before now. |
They figure out about the cast real fast, and hold up the leg and want to run...... Which leg broke, and where was the break? Our little guy broke his right front leg, both bones between the elbow and wrist. Took him to the Emergency vet who knocked him out, and reduced the fracture (got the bones back in line), then put it in a cast. No activity for a Month....come back in a week, check out the Cast, and in 2 weeks, come back for an X-Ray. Well, we took him back in a Month, and I said since we are here, lets do an X-Ray now and see if it is healing well? Well, X-Ray showed that the bones sperated again. Took him to a Board Certified Surgeon who knocked him out, and put a tiny plate and screws in it, and then put the leg in a splint. Same deal, no activity.....We took him back every week to have the splint re-wrapped, and at the end of 4 weeks, an X-Ray that showed a perfect heal, and then he was on light duty (Walking, no running for another 2 weeks), then go for it. The leg is perfect. No limp, no nothing. The little nut still will jump if you let him, so we are careful with both of the spice boys. Little dog bones are harder to mend than large dog bones....Said if it was my Large Cane Corso, chances are the cast would have worked, but for a Yorkie, over 90% of that type of leg break will require surgery for a good outcome. Best of luck to you. It is harder on you than on the pup! Basil was around 4 1/2 months old when it happened. Now 8 months and as fast as Superman. |
yeah you really do they have no fear of anything! |
Glad you saw this Steve, in a previous post I told her to contact you for great advice. |
He broke his left front wrist clean brake all the way across we are on the weekly visit also. Yeah he figured out fast just to hold the cast up and take off. I really hate creating him but every time I dont off he goes. |
Put him in an X-Pen, (2'x4") and carry him for the most part outside for potty breaks....and then back in the Pen.....You will feel sorry for him, but it is the right thing to do for a good heal. Water and food in there with him, and some toys. DO NOT LET HIM walk/run around the house. Was it above the growth plate? I know where Basil's break was was a good spot. Just a suggestion. You may want to have an Ortho Surgeon take a look at the last X-Ray after the repair....My pups leg break hurt me more than any injury I ever had, and I had a few years ago. |
I know I cursed at my husband (he was watching him) and cried for a good hour. I was so scared! It was Above right in the bend. The doc says is should heal fine but....like I said we are doing the weekly visits. |
Xpen or stroller is all I can recommend.....good luck!!! |
A puppy/baby sling if you are willing to wear one to keep him close some. He is still in a chewing mood for teething. If he is allowed I would make sure that he has PLENTY of chew things, maybe he will leave the cast alone. |
I've got him a million toys in his crate he is getting use to it kinda! Now Im having trouble with my 3 year old wanting his puppy out lol! |
