Kidney failure in my yorkie Hello, I am doing research regarding my yorkie having kidney failure. She is only 3 years old and started vomiting and not eating. I took her to the vet and they found out that she had a bacterial infection in her kidneys. They kept her in the hospital for 3 days giving her a drip with antibiotics and other meds to make her better. They sent her home with meds to keep her from vomiting and antibiotics but she is not responding to any of the treatments. That's when I decided to research her symptoms. I am so scared I am going to lose her! It seems she is going down quick and nothing the vets are doing is working. I have now noticed that her breath has changed (not good) with what I am reading about. She can't hardly walk and won't eat. Can anyone help me and tell me how I can help my Maggie?!?! Thanks so much Cyn Bondurant |
I am very sorry that your Maggie is so ill. I do not have any advice, just wanted to let you know that you both will be in my thoughts today. Also, wanted to say welcome to our cyber community. |
Thank you! I appreciate it! Quote:

Do you know what her BUN, CREA and PHOS levels were on her blood work? Did this come on all of sudden? If so, could she have possibly gotten into something? |
I am so sorry about your Maggie. I lost my Dixie at 7 months die to congenital kidney failure. I took her to a kidney specialist who tried to help her but her kidney's never developed. I would try talking Maggie to a specialist if where she is aren't nephrologists. I know when their breath smells it can be from uremic poisoning because the kidney's aren't taking toxins out of their system. Dixie's nephrologist said that he has many yorkies in his practice that do well with treatment. He said if they had at least 25% kidney function a lot can be done. I will keep her in my prayers. |
If you can I would suggest that you ask your Vet to get you a referral to Dr. Caeley Melmed at ---VMSD/FW.com . They are wonderful Doctors there. They are located In Grapevine. I have been there many times when I needed a specialist. Dr. Melmed does handle animals that have kidney problems. |

Maggie woke up yesterday morning unable to potty and in lots of pain. Her body started shutting down because of this disease. I could not watch her suffer like that any longer. I could have been selfish and keep her a little longer but her quality of life was all gone and so quickly too. People from Bluebonnet Pet Cemetery met me at the vets hospital where the Dr. administered a drug to Maggie while she was in my arms. She fell asleep for the last time and won't suffer any more. Bluebonnet took her with them for cremation and just brought her back to me about an hour ago. She may be gone from my sight but never forgotten. She has left her tiny paw prints all over my heart! I am so very sorry to hear of Maggie's passing. I lost my Sammy last month to the same disease. It is an awful thing. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Please take care of yourself. Rest in Peace, sweet Maggie. |
I so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you right now. |
I am so sorry for your loss. |
Oh how tragic too lose a young one so soon. I am sure it was a hard thing to go through but we must do what is best for them. Prayers for comfort and healing for your heart. |

Thank you so much for your prayers, they are so needed. Izzie (Maggie's sister) and I are comforting each other we will be ok. Maggie lives on in our hearts! This is a terrible disease I wish there was a cure for it. Everyone that I have talked to that has gone through it with their pets have lost them. I think what makes me most angry right now is my Vet. She never tried to educate me on the disease, I had to find it out for myself on the Internet. Maybe if it were treated earlier....so many IFs. My prayers are with all of you that have lost your dear ones to this disease too. God bless you all! I am putting Izzie on the Bandfield plan so she can be monitored. I don't want to lose her to. |
I am so very, very sorry. We were in that same situation with my first Yorkie and it was so difficult - but knew we did the right thing. Thoughts of the Rainbow Bridge really gave me comfort. Sending cyber hugs and deep sympathy. |
