Unfortunately, I do not know all things yorkie or all things dogs or vets. I have had Princess for less than 1.5 yrs., my first dog ever, & am doing everything within my power, capability & knowledge to provide for her. I am in no way perfect & not even hinting I am anything close. The situation I am in during this particular time is being handled the best way I can make it. I do trust this vet. Below is her website & some reviews I found as well. We saw Dr. Smitley. When we spoke of a bland diet like boiled chicken & rice I asked if there was something I could sub the rice for since she wont eat it, that is when she said yes, I could use cottage cheese. Then she said she would also send home the I/D. She said she did want her to eat today since her stomach was so empty, so much vomiting & so long since something was held down. What I did based on that conversation is try the I/D, she ate a bit & held it down, was asking for food, when I gave it back to her she turned her nose up so I gave the cottage cheese. It wasn't a whirlwind decision to just see whatever she could eat. She did also say that fasting after a pancreatic attack as they used to do has not proven to be any more beneficial than offering food, esp. in smaller breeds. Of course, I cannot prove/verify that, just going by what she said. They will be calling to check on her tomorrow, I will bring them UTD on everything that's went on since I left there as well as inquiring about the blood panel & see what she says. If anyone has anything they'd like to add by all means feel free to express it. I read tons of books, watched dvd's, talked to other dog owners & have spent countless hours on YT reading whatever I could find. Apparently I did not spend enough time in this thread, probably because I thought Princess was healthy so far so I would not have to worry about something like this. All I can do is learn & go from there. There's no taking back anything, even as recent as an appt. 7 hours ago. I am doing the best that I can & Princess is improving a lot from Tues. when this nightmare began. I just want to say I am so glad your sweet little angel is feeling better. My thoughts and prayers are with you right now, as she continues to heal and get better. What a horrible ordeal.. I am so sorry. I am also in awe and in tears how generous and loving people here are on YT. What an amazing story. |
I thought about you and your baby alot today. I lived through a similar moment with one of our poodles a few years ago. He went from Im fine to cannt hold my head up in less than 2hrs. 3days in the hospital and $1000 later he was fine. He has not ever had another spell like that and he has been able to eat normally ever sense. I hope that the same is for your baby. |

I am sorry that I got lost today. I see that you asked me some questions earlier. I had a bit of a nightmare day. One of my fosters was discharged from the hospital today and then this evening ended up in the EC. Anyway...enough of that. Just did not want you to think I had ignored you. I am so happy that things are working out. God Bless Karen, Lila and Bonny. The next fool that trash talks YT I am sending to this thread. One thing I want to say: When a dog does not eat you should not go looking for something different. They eat when they are hungry! I agree with Cathy...NO cottage cheese. Any pup that has had GI issues especially should only be given the food the vet suggested...in this case I/D. Nothing added! :) A lot of people think a dog should eat a lot at every meal...sometimes they skip meals. Giving them other foods to entice them can lead to problems like you just had! |
Thanks, Ladyjane, I hope your baby is well soon, too. I have learned for one that I have to keep Princess on a very dog friendly diet & not just be the nice mom and give into her. I never want to go through this again!!! Not in regards to money or stress or carpet stains, as it doesn't matter. What mattered was seeing her glazed over eyes & seeing that she didn't care about what are the best things in life to her, looking at Princess yet not seeing her. It was too scary & I hope to God no one has to got through that. Yes, the support on YT has been phenomenal. Anyone that has had any negative perception of this forum should read this thread & see where everyone's thoughts & focus turned to Princess immediately when it was clear she was in trouble. There's no reason someone shouldn't be able to get along with such a warm group of people that care so much about an animal they may never meet.:yorkietal:2hearts2::yorkiesar |
I am very happy that Princess is doing much better and I agree with Linda, follow a very strict diet for your pup. Remind yourself that eating and appetite are not the primary measurements of health and happiness. Sometimes the dog's system needs to rest. Don't give in to the temptation to give treats or to offer more and more food. Definitely ditch the cottage cheese , not only because it is dairy and high in fat, but it is really high in protein. Praying Princess continues to grow stronger and recovers completely. :) |

I'm so happy to hear Princess is feeling better! :) I recognize the look you describe in Princess and it's one I hope I never have to see again - it's terrifying to see your little one so sick and not know what's wrong or how to help them. :( I'm so glad to hear Princess will be on a consistent diet that works for her - that will be very important to keep her healthy in the future. Give Princess an extra big hug and kiss for me this morning, Bonny Linda, I hope your little foster is ok! Sending prayers for your baby as well. |
I have to agree to ditch the cottage cheese. We dealt with chronic pancreatitis for the last couple of years of Cricket's life. I posted some of our exp on another page of this thread. The best thing is to stay in the I/D canned. I think on another thread Ladyjane told ppl how to bake them into treats for their dogs so that they can have a healthy treat. Great idea for dogs with GI issues and pancreatitis! Please be careful deviating from the I/D. We have found small deviations that seem harmless can trigger another bout. So glad to hear Princess is home, doing well, and hopefully mom could rest a little easier last eve! :) |
She's continuing to improve this morning as well. She wanted to go with me to take DD to vball practice, though I opted to leave her home for a few mins. instead. She's very perky considering how she was less than 24hr. ago. The tech already called to check in on her so she's checking with the Doc now to figure out what blood work to run & said she'd call me back within the hour. She's getting nothing but I/D & water, if she "asks" for a treat I just offer a little I/D & she'll usually take a bite & be satisfied. Looks like one can will last a long time, even with her regular appetite so I'm going to ask her if we should continue it solely for a while. |
Princess goes for a full blood panel in the a.m. & they said the results will be in by the afternoon. Hopefully this will give us a clear indication of what is/was going on. She said she didn't offer them yesterday because she knew funds were limited & it was before I was aware of the credit on my account. |

The tech said it'd check for liver/kidney abnormalities among other things & I also specified I wanted to either confirm or rule out the pancreatitis if possible. Is there anything else I should ask for specifically? I want to get as much done as I have the means to. |
The price difference could just be because it's a different vet or the other vet quoted for a more comprehensive panel. Unless it's an emergency, we do all labs out-house too. Sometimes cheaper. They include more. Much fewer errors. Ellie's doctor sends her own dogs' labs our too. |
