****warning**** A friend of mine just posted this on facebook.... Her 5 yr old mini Aussie had a torn ACL to avoid surgery her vet put her on rimadyl (sp?) 3 days later her furbaby hemorrhaged in her arms. another one of her friends furbaby was also put on this med for pain. she became very lethargic and started bleeding from the nose, thankfully she survived. I know they put my girls on a pain med when I had them spayed...I want to say it was this med....THANK GOD! nothing happened to them. IF they ever need to be put on pain meds again..,I will NOT allow this one.....Just wanted to send this along to all of you....I'm sure there are plenty of safer pain meds out there. |
That's sad and scary. |
Was bloodwork done before starting it? Should be before putting a pup on NSAIDs... NSAIDs tend to work really well. Unfortunately, all drugs have side effects. |

I've heard this before, and there's plenty of info about this drug. My vet has prescribed Metacam instead. Here's a link about Rimadyl. The Senior Dogs Project |
Thank you for sharing this information. |
I agree with Crystal, there are side effects with any medication. Pets should be evaluated before anything is prescribed. Before anyone swears off Rimadyl and turns to an alternative, consider the statistics that are well documented. If Rimadyl is given to 90% of doggy patients and 5 suffer side effects, while an alternative medication is given to 10% of doggy patients and 5 suffer side effects, which one is safer? Rimadyl has no greater incidence of side effects than any alternatives, but we hear about it more because it is much more widely prescribed. Max has been taking Rimadyl off and on for his eye problems and has had no problems. |
I have also heard bad things about rimadyl and thankfully my vet feels Metacam is much safer so that is all we use |

I know many people are scared of Rimadyl. It is used constantly though and so many vets do use it, so the reaction rate may be higher because of that. Ellie's vet uses it, Metacam, and Deramaxx depending on what's going on and the dog. I like Metacam, esp. when small dogs needs an NSAID. My preference. |
With all NSAIDS, Rimadyl or Metacam, pets should have routine blood and urine tests and physical examinations to monitor kidneys, liver, lungs and heart. If a pet is on any other medications, the vet should take that into account before prescribing. Crystal, what is the reason for your preference? Just curious in case Max ever needs another NSAID. |
I have had many pups on Rimadyl without any issues at all! I also have used Metacam. As others have stated: There are side effects to ALL medications. Just happens sometimes. That does not mean it will happen every time to every pup. I had a foster who lost his hearing (thankfully it was temporary because of an ear medication. A remote side effect, but it did occur. We all need to always be alert to changes when our pups are on medications and also be aware of what side effects could occur. |

I have used both rimadyl and metacam with no issues. |

I recently became allergic to amoxicillan. I took it for years, and never had a problem. The last 2 times I was prescribed, I broke out in hives and my lips and eyes swelled. It's now listed as a do not prescribe med. |
