Allergy Help, My little boy Rascal is scratching like crazy again. We have taken him to the vet twice in the last 2 months for a cortezone shot. Last was 2 weeks ago. Seems to be in the early Summer when pollen levels are high. I worry about the shoots hurting his liver kidneys. Is there anything else we can do. I gave him childrens benedryl doesn't seem to help much. Is there anything else we could be doing natural meds etc. Until this year 1 to 2 shoots a year he was good to go. This year there is a bunch of dry weather, and my wife his mommy passed away from breast cancer 2 weeks ago. So I think he is stressing about that. I worry about the little guy!!! Thanks for your imput. Dave & Rascal |
If it is just a couple steroid injections a year, that shouldn't be a huge deal. You can also get pills (lesser dose) for this time of year. Alternatively, something safer for long term use for environmental allergies is Atopica. That might be worth a try. Antihistamines (Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec) sometimes work, and that's a good choice, but sometimes they don't work. Since it is likely environmental allergies, skin allergy testing (usually done by a dermatologist) would be a good way to go. Then injections can be formulated especially for your pup. Allergy shots are preferred over steroids, esp. for long term use. |
^ Agree with everything. Also, it's worth looking into his food. What is he eating? Food allergies are less common, but they do happen. Also, wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your wife. I am sure it's been extremely difficult for you and the little guy to handle. My thoughts are with you! |
Thanks we miss her dearly, we feed him cooked chicken breast and Hills Science Diet ID for his stomach. I thought about taking him to another vet or maybe to medvets in Columbus and see what they say. Dave |
I am sorry for your loss. I have one of mine with allergies on the Atopica for several years and it has worked great. But mine has year round allergies. I hope you can find something to work. |
