I am freaking out! Possible Xylitol consumption! My DD had this shoe box out with crayons & markers a while back & it's been sitting closed for several days. Well I threw her cuz and it landed by the box. Princess was kind of messing with the box but I thought her ball was just jammed beside it & the book shelf & I didn't see the lid open. My DD went to free the ball & found an out of package piece of stride gum. It's apparantly old & has no package, it's intact but Jazz thinks there may have been more. I called ER vet & they said induce vomiting with 1 tsp. peroxide & wait 15-20 mins. for vomit. It's been about 10, she's POed at me now & is trying to sleep. Online it says stride has 15 mg. of xylitol, is that a lot? seems like it is. What symptoms am i supposed to be looking for? can it wait until I give her second dose? i'm not even sure she had any, i just don't know what to do. |
can you call a poison control center. I think that is a lot of xylitol. Oh bless your heart. I know you are beside yourself. I think I would call the ER vet and see what they say. |
I hope Princess is okay! Has she vomited yet? |
I gave her a 2nd dose & shortly after fingered through (with gloves) 3 piles & found no gum. I called the ER back & they said it would've come up with everything else if she did, so I just hope they're right! They basically wont do anything to help her unless she shows signs of the xylitol since I already had her vomit. She said signs could be lethargy, more vomiting, diarrhea, no appetite...does anyone know if this is true? I want to watch for everything, I'll be up all night, I don't care. We're only 5 mins. from ER so if something comes up I'm sure we'll be there in 3. |

From what I'm reading it takes higher amounts of the xylitol to cause liver failure. I hope she didn't get any. |
She has vomited & I found nothing. I hope that was it-nothing! I wonder, should I give her some nutri-cal now? She's not a tiny but it looks like she lost most of today's food. I found this site, thought I'd post so others can see it. snopes.com: Xylitol Deadly to Dogs |
I would get her to the ER vet and ask questions later - just in case. I pray she got none! |
I hope your lil girl will be just fine. |
I hope she is ok. The couple of times one of mine got a pill they shouldn't have, they vomited it up after I gave them the hydrogen peroxide. My experience is that if you get them to vomit within 30 minutes of swallowing something it comes back up. A few months ago my girlfriends dh put out rat poison in the bushes outside and didn't tell her. One night one of her Cavalier's came in from their walk with a green block in her mouth. She had eaten some before my friend realized it and what it was. She called me and I told her to call the er vet but to give her and her other cavalier hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. The er vet told her the same thing and to bring them both in. Her one vomited up a lot of the green poison. They treated them as a precaution and both were fine. So I think the fact that you didn't see any gum in the vomit she most likely didn't get any. Hopefully she will be fine. |
She's been fine so far. Understandably, she was kind of pooped from vomiting, but she's been initiating fetch, though I've been keeping it low key. I know gum especially does not digest quickly & I induced vomiting about 5 minutes after she have had it, so I don't think she did eat any. Either way, we are cleaning this house tomorrow. My DD eats a ton of sugar free gum & once I learned of xylitol poisoning I told her & we keep everything up. This today was from 2-3 years ago, but we need to go through all of the stuff my DD has in case there's anymore any place else. Certainly scary, I could barely talk to the vet or type, anything. Thankful everything's ok so far. Thanks for the kind thoughts & support. |
Hope she is doing good this morning. After finding out about xylitol I banned it from the house. My DD would have it sometimes but I told her no more. I wouldn't take the chance. |
Very scary! I'm glad you were able to induce vomiting right away. How is Princess feeling this morning? Give her extra hugs from me. |
When I found a ripped up pack of gum one evening, I called the ER and was directed over the phone to induce vomitting. Only one of my girls had gotten into it but we induced both girls just to be safe. All the gum came up with her vomit and both girls were fine. We have since banned Xylitol products from inside the house. I hope Princess is okay and had a restful night. |
Princess is going just fine...and oblivious to the fact that she almost gave me a heart attack. My DD rarely has gum anymore, I actually don't remember buying any since the xylitol scare on here a while back when I learned about it being toxic. She knows it's dangerous & she was worried sick, too. We're going to do a through cleaning of her room, just to make sure there isn't some stashed somewhere else. She keeps her door shut, but sometimes Princess goes in there if I do. What I really didn't like about all this is on Stride's website I couldn't even find an ingredient list, xylitol amount, nothing. Maybe I overlooked it in a panic, but I ended up getting info on wiki & other sites. Princess & I thank you for the extra caring & hugs. |
