Great news it is always special when you bring them home. |
glad that Lexi is home/ hope she feels better |
I would like to add that I think that Taste of the Wild may have caused Lexi's problems. I used to cook for Lexi when I first got her, however she tired of the food within a month and half. I then switched her to Wellness, but it gave her bad diarrhea so I discontinued using it, so while I was on a search for the best commercial food for her, I fed her brown rice and veggies. After an intense search I found good reviews on Taste of the Wild. However, it was noted that it contained high fat/protein content and might cause dogs to become over weight. I overlooked this and thought nothing of it since the other ingredients were so great. The vet advised that high fat foods, oils and treats can cause Pancreatitis in dogs. Lexi doesnt eat any oily foods or table scraps, just rice, veggies and fruits. I also don't give her any dairy products, with the exception of the cottage cheese i gave her a few months back when she wouldnt eat, but that was for 2 days and she also isn't given any treats. So it seems like the Taste of Wild may have caused the Pancreatitis and Gastritis. Lexi put on 1.5 Lbs since being on the Taste of the Wild for 1 week (3 Servings a day) and up until she started vomiting she had ate only Taste of the Wild. I know this product gets very good reviews but I now have my doubts. Also I note that the size of kibble is very big, I had to soak it a bit for Lexi to eat it. So its quite obvious that although Taste of the Wild is a great food it was not manufactured with small dogs and their needs in mind. I would appreciate any feedback and opinions on this. |

So glad Lexi is home and on the mend... There are many good foods to be had, but sometimes our pups have sensitive systems so it is more a matter of finding what food she can tolerate that won't make her sick. It doesn't mean that any food is 'good' or 'bad'. Each dog is different, and a food that one dog does well on does not mean that your dog will do well on it. Some folks end up having to feed a 'less than premium' dog food, just to accomodate their dogs' special needs. And some pups are so sensitive they require a prescription diet, or many owners schedule an appointment with a nutritionist who makes up a special diet for the dog, keeping in mind and avoiding any ingredients that may cause them to become sick. It will be trial and error, and working with your vet and /or a nutritionist, to find a food that is good for her. Keeping your baby in my prayers.... |
I am praying for Lexi and I hope she is feeling much better. Our little girl Kinder had diarrea and vomiting a month ago. Our vet found that she is allergic to chicken so now she is better. Hope all goes well for you. Susan |

I'm so glad that Lexi is doing better and that she is home with you. Sending best wishes. I agree with Kathy's post. The best food is the one that works best for your pup. Wow, your baby gained 1.5 pounds in a week on TOTW?! Too much, too fast under any circumstances. That is amazing. Thank you for sharing your experience here. I know you are going to feed kibble, but if you ever decide to home cook again, keep in mind that you should seek the guidance of a professional canine nutritionist. It is very easy to feed an improperly balanced diet that can lead to health problems. The rice and veggie diet doesn't have adequate protein. |
Also, when switching foods or diets, be sure to do a slow transition. For instance, when going from homecooked to kibble, introduce kibble slowly. |
Hi Maximo thanks for the advice. She did gain alot pretty quickly. I was surprised! Not good I know :thumbdown She only ate the rice and veggies for about two servings but her Wellness was also mixed in. I was giving her the rice in order to bring her stool back to normal, until I found another food. Lexi hasnt switched to many foods. Its just that she is picky and what she does like, for instance the Wellness it doesnt have a good affect on her. But when I did switch the food it was a slow transition. The vet was nice enough to give me recipes for home cooked food. But I dont think I will continue to cook for her, from now on I'll just continue with the kibble. She is on Hill's ID right now for about a week, during that time i will slowly introduce the Royal Canin then hopefully if she likes it I will keep her on that full time. I love Lexi like a child and believe me when I tell you every lil' grunt, whine and cry makes me nervous and worrisome, so I try my best to ensure that she is well taken care of by putting her health first priority. I understand these dogs are very fragile and i know we have to be so careful with them. But its all love.... the joy they bring pay off for all the rest! |
Just saw this and I'm slow glad Lexi is home and doing so much better! Zhoie has been on TOTW (fish) and does very well on it. It's one of the lower in protein/fat and seems to be working for her. She won't eat anything else. We do train with itty bitty dog treats or to praise with, but that's it. Oh, if I bake chicken or turkey, she gets a couple bits and will gobble that right up. Not a fruit eater either. :( |
