Legg-Calve-Perthes disease - Advice I need advice. My Toby has had issues with limping for about a month now. We've taken him to the vet for x-rays, and initial diagnosis indicates either a hip injury or LCP disease. He still limps at times, but is not consistent. I want to do what's best for Toby, even if it means surgery, but when? Do I get it done ASAP, or wait? |
I'm sorry Toby is going through this, and I highly recommend seeing an orthopedic surgeon, the sooner the better. The specialist is best equipped to give you a definitive diagnosis and recommendations for treatment. For orthopedic surgery, you definitely want a specialist. |
Here is an older post from someone who has experience with this condition: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/2990188-post3.html |

My Piper had Legg Perthes Disease. When she was 8 months old I noticed that she was carrying her hind leg off and on. After about a week of this off and on leg carrying I brought her to the vets. X-rays showed a deteriotating of the femur head with bone chips flotting in the hip socket. Piper had FHO surgery within the week. Healing took a good 6-8 weeks before she was 100%. |
Thank you for the quick posts. Will he recover to be able to run and play again without pain? Also, my husband and kids won't keep him crated; they feel sorry for him. I just want what's best for him... |
Legg Perthes is extremely painful. Even if he is not limping all of the time, it does hurt. I have had a few fosters who have had the surgery and they have done very well. I do strongly suggest that you see a board certified surgeon for this. I was at the vet hospital one day and had a conversation with a lady who had a regular vet do this surgery and the sciatic nerve was severed. She was at the specialist for answers on this. Very sad...I don't know what ever happened to her pup. It is a relatively simple surgery, but I would still only use a specialist. After the surgery, there really is not a lengthy recovery period. It is not like surgery where there are plates and pins....there is nothing to "undo" so to speak. They do limp for a while after the surgery. I have one right now who is about a month out from his surgery and he does use his leg now unless he runs...then he lifts it. That will resolve with time. I would definitely ask for some meds for him until he has the surgery....and I would do the surgery as soon as I could. A consult with a specialist is definitely something I recommend. As for the crating concerns, I have not crated the ones that had this surgery and all was just fine! But...you should ask the vet about that as well. Good luck and welcome to YT. :) |

I agree with Lady Jane....take him to a board certified specialist and see that they say...we have always done that with all our fosters and they too have had great results... plus you want a definite answer which they can give you |
