Coughing/Gagging/Hacking
 
My Brady Bug has had a hacking cough for a little over a week now. At first it was infrequent which led me to think allergies, but has been happening more and more often. Last night he and Tanner slept in their kennels as I had just applied their Frontline and he woke me up several times coughing so hard his whole crate was shaking/rattling around. Aside from the cough and a little bit of a runny nose he is eating fine and has a normal level of energy. He's up to date on his vaccines - including Bordatella.

I called our vet this morning and they want me to bring him in as they are seeing a strain of Kennel Cough which is not normally included in the Bordatella vaccine and running rampant in our area right now.

What is normal diagnosis/treatment protocol if it is Kennel Cough? And do I need to ask them to check/treat Tanner as well?

I'm glad you are getting Brady in to see the doc. Talk to your vet about Tanner. I have not had first hand experience with kennel cough, but when I discussed the vaccine with our vet, he said dogs who are closed up with one another (like at home) and coughing on each other, are at risk.

My puppy just got kennel cough, and I took him to the vet yesterday. They said they usually dont treat it in older dogs because it is a self limiting virus, but they treated my little but since he is around 6 weeks. They gave him a antibiotic shot, put him in a nebulizer box and sent me home with three days worth of antibiotics to take one in the morning one at night, and he is going back in the neb box on thursday. For our other dog, they said watch for symptoms but they wont treat him unless he is sick.

Good luck, and Im sure the vet will know whats best for you pup.

I also wanted to add that if I fill the bathroom or shower up with steam and sit in there for awhile with my pup it has given him a few hours of relief of no coughing or seldom coughing. I even got up a few times in the middle of the night and it seemed to help. going to buy a humidifier today.

Vet determined it isn't kennel cough, but isn't quite sure what it is. He said it seems to be more in his lower respiratory system than his trachea, but said his lungs sounded clear. For the time being he is calling it viral bronchitis and gave us some cough suppressant tablets to help with the cough and prevent tracheal damage from the cough. They seem to be working so far.

Could this just be allergies as I originally thought?

Hello,

I am searching the forum right now and came across your post. I am really worried about my 3 yr old baby boy this week. he has been hacking and today he was doing it so much that his eyes are closing. I am sooo worried since we live in the hills and really is not convenient to get down to an ER. I tried to clean his nose with a Qtip just now. I thought it was allergy too since my other yorkie is doing the same thing but not as much as my little guy.

I wonder if it's my perfume, candles or hair spray but I have always used these products. I am so worried.

I gave him baby benadryl tablets this morning and will give him another one tonight. Could it be kennel cough? They are all up to date on shots?

Any thoughts? I was thinking if it does not get better by Monday, I will take him to the vet. Better safe than sorry.

Hey there! It could be allergies or could be kennel cough. But for either a humidifier helps. Before I bought the humidifier though I left the shower running as hot as possible until the bathroom filled with steam and sat with him for about 15 minutes every 2 hours even through the night. It gave him a huge relief from coughing. Also Canned wet dog food is what the vet suggested, because it moistens the throat. Just like the flu shot though, a kennel cough shot only prevents a few strands that are most popular. It could still be kennel cough and the sooner you get them in the faster the relief will be. We got both dogs in the day it started over two weeks ago now and one pup is still on neb treatments. The coughing only lasted a few days but if you don't nip it in the butt it can last 3-8 weeks. I hope your pups start feeling better!

If he is coughing that much, I would get him to a vet. He may need a cough suppressant or antibiotic. My little Gidget had a cough that lasted about 2 months. She was on antibiotics, cough suppressants and allergy meds. The vet thought it was a combination of allergies and bacterial infection. Also, check his gums when having coughing episodes to make sure he is getting oxygen. Gums and tongue should be pink, not pale and especially not blue or purple. That would be an emergency as he is not getting oxygen.

If your vet thinks it viral, then it will clear up eventually. Allergies tend to get worse when the allegen is present. Is there a place in your house or something you do that makes him noticably worse at any time? If not, then your vet is probably right about it being a virus.

Vaccines do not cover all the diseases dogs can get, in fact, they cover very few of them. Just because a dog is up to date on his vaccines does not mean that he can't become seriously ill with something. The sooner he is seen the better. Respiratory infections can easily turn into pneumonia.

Also, just because dogs are okay one day with candles and such, does not mean that they will not develop an allergy to the products at some point in their lives. Scented candles and air freshners are always suspect when allergies are evident. Plug in air freshners have been proven to cause illness/allergic reactions in dogs.

Teddy at some point was diagnosed with that too. We went through like three rounds of different medicines before we finally found one that worked for him. Just make sure to give the medicine as prescribed and if the coughing doesn't get better take him in again. Sometimes some medicines work for some dogs and others don't so just make sure to keep an eye on him. If it's what the vet said, then it should clear up. It took Teddy up to a month and a half to completely clear up but with all dogs it's different. :)
