Kennel Cough 1 Attachment(s) Last night Miso started coughing. It sounded more like a "honking", so I youtubed some videos and saw it was very close to dogs infected with Kennel cough viruses. This morning I woke up and called the vet on post, and they said to treat him they would need to test him for distemper and parvo and they were out of the kits. They gave me some shady directions to an off post Korean doctor. About an hour later I found the other vet, after driving around in a taxi. The clinic was very nice and several of the employees and vets spoke very well english. He guessed also that Miso was probably younger than 6 weeks. Well the good news is its neither Parvo or distemper! Poor little guy received an antibiotic shot, and went into the nebulizer box. he will be on antibiotics for the next three days two times daily, and go back on thursday for another nebulizer treatment. He is currently being held away from Kimchi, even though Kimchi is fully vaccinated, and they hate it! kimchi is sad without his playmate. Keep little miso in your thoughts for a speedy recovery! |
omg! i just youtube kennel cough after i read your post and i do hear my yorkie cough like this from time to time but not often should:confused: i be worried? |
If it is not a constant thing, like say when you have a cold/cough, then it isn't kennel cough. More than likely it is allergies that are affecting your pet. As for Miso I will keep the little angel in my thoughts. My pom had kennel cough not too long ago and it was awful...poor baby never got any sleep with as much as he coughed. He sleeps under our bed so we didn't sleep much either. Hope Miso feels like new soon. |

Did the breeder give him a kennel cough/bordetella vaccine? Bc that vaccine can actually *cause* kennel cough - and should never, ever be given to a newborn. I hope little Miso heals quickly. He is so darling. Another thing I'd suggest is making sure he has a stuffed 'Mama dog' for comfort and security. Since he will miss out on the socialization process given my his Mama - it would help to mimic some of those actions so that he can be secure and learn what he will miss if he was still w/ his fur Mama. :) |
I am glad you had him seen by a vet. He is adorable. I hope he gets over the kennel cough quickly and has no other health scares. |

And they also forge paper work here, so they sell the puppies very young. It was something we knew when we decided to get a dog here. He is our 2nd from the area, and the other has been great. I know a lot of people dont understand why or how you could buy a dog in the conditions they are here (puppy mills are not uncommon) but we are in a country where eating dog is still a practiced tradition =( Anyway thank you for your input I have been cuddling him a lot, holding him, and the vets here are very good with this young of dog, since its normal. His condition did seem to get worse though which has been worrying me. He coughed all night and the only thing that brought relief was to sit in the bathroom with the hot water running. That would stop his cough for a few hours. He spit up his antibiotics this morning also. I think I am going to give the vet a call and see if there is anything they can give him for the cough. I listened to his lungs also with a stethoscope and they sounded junkie, possibly like pneumonia. I am no vet, but I am a nurse and I have heard Pneumonia many times. The vet told me this could happen, and that if he wasn't getting better by our check up on thursday that we will try something else. We are going to talk to the couple we bought him from, the wife spoke really good english and tell her the situation and show them the bills and ask if they can help pay, or what can they do. They have a 14 day "return" policy but im not interested in returning my baby, I want to make him better. Thanks everyone for the well wishes, I will keep updating. |
Praying that Miso will feel better soon. I am sure it is very difficult being in another country but it is wonderful Miso and Kimchi have a good home. |

My degree is in nursing too :)...although I'm not nursing at this time. Hmmm...regarding the pneumonia; if you do suspect kennel cough for some reason, the main concern in young pups is that it can easily progress to pneumonia, which can be grave for puppies. The most important thing for kennel cough in pups is to try and prevent the progression. What they normally do here for KC is to give antibiotics and a good cough suppressant (so they sleep well, and don't get worse from not sleeping). It can often take up to 2 mths for a puppy to heal from KC/pneumonia. Keep us posted; I will keep your kiddo in my thoughts :). |

Just wanted to stop in to say I'm thinking about little Niso and hoping he starts feeling better soon. |
Update on Miso So I have been so exhausted, tired, frustrated, sad, everything in the last few days. poor puppy has had an awful time. So monday I took miso to vet off post because the vet on post was "out of supplies" (seriously?) Well he got the nebulizer treatment and antibiotics two times a day for three days. That day after we came home he was ok for the day thanks to the nebulizer, but the night time rolled around and he was awfully sick. Hacking, and couldn't breath. I spend so much time with him in the bathroom with the steam on. He slept with me all night long. The next day he stopped eating and drinking. I had to force his meds. I called the vet that evening and she said it didnt sound like an emergency. I was stuck at home (in Korea downtown Seoul) with no way to get to post to buy supplies) My husband finally came back this night. He didn't eat and drink for about 36 hours and apparently they didn't consider that an emergency in a 5/6 week puppy. Finally my husband came home from his trip and we went to the store and I got him to eat some scrambled eggs and chicken, actually a lot! Which stimulated him to drink again. So now he is eating and drinking and I feel much better about it. We went to the people who we bought him from and they wanted to take him back, nurse him back to health and then give him back. we asked where they would keep him, upstairs, in a 1 foot by 1 foot cage, no humidifier, and no one around after 8pm. UM NO WAY. Thats my baby. They did give us cough syrup though. Which is another story. I called the vet on post and the said they didnt have cough syrup there. WHAT? So today we go back to the vet on post for vaccines, and Kimchi gets micro chipped and rabies vaccine, (I hope i dont go off on them) and then off post to the other vet, since the on post vet cant do nebulizers either. Its been crazy but I think he is slowly making progress. Keep him in your thoughts. |
Miso is so lucky to have such a loving mommy. This has got to be so horrible for you and your babies. So glad you didn't let the breeder have him back they probably would not have taken care of him. Still praying Miso continues to feel better, |
