Swollen Lymph Nodes on neck Momo had his dentals about 2 yrs ago. I try my best, but he won't let me brush his teeth, so his teeth has a lot of plaque build up. He also won't let me touch his ears either, but I do clean it b4 his bath once a week. His ears are clean, just a little wax sometimes. I've noticed his glands (which I found out today that they're lymph nodes) by his jaw line on his neck was swollen. Took him in today & our vet said it could be an infection. He prescribed some antibiotics for his mouth & drops for his ears bc it was a little inflamed. We have to go back for a recheck in a week. Our vet wants the swelling to go down & infection to clear up b4 Momo can have his teeth cleaned again. He said not to worry about any cancerous scares, but how can not worry? Has anyone experienced this & did it clear up after the antibiotic treatment? I need to get some probiotics...can someone recommend one? Can I get it at GNC? How much do I give him? I should've paid more attention to threads discussing probiotics. Will have to search tomorrow, getting really late. Thanks in advance! |
Jenny, I don't have any advice to offer - just wanted to send you and Momoman big hugs. I'm sure the antibiotics will get him all fixed up in no time. Hugs, Bonny |
The cause of the swollen lymph nodes could most definitely be due to teeth/gum problems. If your dog needs a dental, that is MUCH more likely to be the cause than cancer. Did your Vet do an exam where they palpated other areas to see if they could find swollen glands elsewhere? If so, they probably didn't find any others affected except around the jaw, which led them to believe that the problem was an infection in the mouth. |
Poor Momo. I hope the antibiotics clear him right up and he can have his teefies cleaned, and he'll be good as new. :) I'd trust your vet, but if the antibiotics don't clear up the infection I'd ask for them to aspirate the lymph node. I truly don't want to scare you, but when my bullmastiff had giant swollen lymph nodes under his neck it was lymphoma (which we were able to treat successfully with chemo for two years), but there are many, many, many minor things that can cause swollen lymph nodes (just like on people). |
Sorry to hear about Momo having problems...hope he's feeling better soon... I use probiotics w/enzymes from Nature's Farmacy: (1/8 tsp daily for small dogs)(small container lasts a long time) Nature's Farmacy - Store - Product Details= And a product like this or Petzlife gel to help clean his teeth: Nature's Farmacy - Store - Product Details Apply to the gumline (no brushing required) |
The swollen Nodes do not mean cancer at all. We have experienced it with other dogs, and my daughter just took her dog in for it. She was freaked out thiking cancer and it was an infection. |
Everyone who has experience with this is giving great advice. Wanted to say I hope the antibiotics clear up things for Momo & he is back to feeling great really really soon. He has such a great mommie to be on top of things for him. |
You can get probiotics at Petco and Petsmart. |
I am quite sure it is because of the teeth! I have had many pups come to me that needed dentals..and they had enlarged nodes. I have further given them antibiotics without any issues at all and do not give probiotics every single time I give an antibiotic to a pup...or when I take them. I have found that my pups need dentals yearly...I have a couple that can stretch a bit longer, but yearly is the norm for mine. I like to avoid infections because long term it can have a very bad effect on the heart and other organs. |
Sending best wishes to Momo for when he goes in for his dental. Hope the antibiotics clear things quickly. My father had a lymph node swell in his neck after some dental work. It took some time to go down. He was worried, so the doctor did a CT and other tests just to reassure him that it was nothing. |
I have no advice to offer but pray these antibiotics help Momo and he is able to have his dental soon. |

I've been using Chlorhexidine wipes to clean his teeth & gums, but he has some yucky build up on his back molars (that's where I can't reach w/out him fighting me). His face is so squishy (short snout) that his teeth are so tiny & close together, it's very crowded in there. I also have Petzlife, but haven't used it much bc it contains alcohol. |

Thank You everyone for the loving support & wonderful advice! I no longer feel the heavy worry I felt late last night. Now if someone can tell me how to magically have Momo sit still through teeth brushing? lolll:p |
Keeping Momo in my prayers. |
Update Thank You Patti! Quote:
The reason she thinks it's the salivary glands is bc Momo always has his tongue sticking out & he kinda drools, thus making him lick his mouth a lot. She said his mouth doesn't close right because of his teeth settings (which could also contribute to his drooling lolll). He has really funky teeth, they're tiny & his molars are kinda turned outwards, showing the roughness side. She also said Momo can wait another year to have his dentals done (this I'm very happy about). She also showed me how to clean his teeth w/my fingers using a gauze. Thank You everyone for sending your virtual love & good vibes our way! Momo sends you all his slobbery luvin kisses!:p |
Sounds like good news... keeping little Momo in my prayers...wet, slobbery kisses from Momo are always welcome....:D |
I am glad to hear that is not a serious problem. Hugs for you and Momo. |
