Question for those w/ Dogs w/ Epilepsy Teddy has been really tired and lethargic for the last 24 hours and it followed severe storms (there was a tornado that hit our neighboring state). He was fine during the storm, not scared, etc, but yesterday (one day after) he was just out of it. My two older dogs were playing and chewing and Teddy was catatonic. I was almost going to take him to the vet but he does perk up with food and he wanted to play with his stick (his two favorite things). Has anyone with a dog w/ epilepsy had different behaviors following a big storm? He seems completely different today - active, bright-eyed, alert, happy. |
No, Becca never did anything like that that I can remember. Becca was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was almost 4, so she had it for about 7 years (hers were grand mal seizures). They do have days, like we do, when they just don't feel 100%. Maybe Teddy was just having an off day unrelated to the weather? Poor little guy - please give him more big huggins for me. Bonny |
Cathy, I have not experienced this with Max. And I agree with Bonny. Maybe he was just having an off day. He seems fine now? |
Max's diagnosis is fairly new so I haven't experienced this. Hope it was just an off day like Bonny said |
Could he have had a seizure during the night? |
I have no idea, but I hope it turns out to be no big deal at all, just some fright. |
My experience with epilepsy is all human related (worked in a neurosurgery unit and had friends with it), and like Bonny's Becca, the people with it had "off" days. Sending best wishes to your little Teddy. |

Cathy, I'm thinking Teddy had a seizure you didn't see, because what you describe sounds postictal to me. It is the time after a seizure that lasts 20 minutes to a whole day. During this time, the epileptic dog or person may be weak, confused, and tired, with muscle aches and big headaches. By the next day they are usually fine again. I'm sorry Teddy has to go through this. Keeping a seizure diary may help the vet know how frequently seizures are occurring. This can help when they are regulating Teddy's medication. Oh, and btw- I don't think it had anything to do with the storm. It was just a coincidence. Hugs to Teddy! |
Thanks and update Thanks to all the comments and thoughts. Teddy was right back to himself the following day. I believe the storm affected him - it might have even woken him up during the night making him tired the next day. I just know that sometimes low pressure and storm systems affect people (migraine sufferers, arthritis, etc) so I was just wondering whether they impacted dogs w/ epilespy. I guess it is a question for his neurologist next time I talk to him. I am pretty sure he did not have a seizure. |
