Roxxy's surgeries tomorrow, so scared My baby is scheduled tomorrow to be spayed. In addition, she's having teeth pulled as well as dew claw removal. I am so very anxious. I know it really needs to be done but I really only want to call it off. She is so tiny and I don't want her to be in pain. Though the Vet says they bounce back quick I have a hard time believing that one day worth of pain meds will be enough. I've had multiple surgeries and know what I went through and HATE to think of my baby in pain. Do you all think that the tooth removal will make it all too much? The Vet thinks all will be fine but I'm just so worried. Please, tell me what to expect. In your experience, how long before she'll feel better. Though I don't yet see adult teeth, how long should it be before they come in? The vet says right away but I'm not sure. Her brother lost some teeth at least a month ago but she hasn't. Will she cry from the pain of the spay procedure? What about the dew claw? Any experiences or advice you want to share will be welcome. |
Why just one day of pain drugs? That would not be acceptable to me nor to my dog's vet. It's a hysterectomy. Pain drugs should be given. Was bloodwork done? All looks good? Why the dewclaw removal? Is she having a problem with them? Removing baby teeth is not too much. Yes, she will have some pain, but in the long run it is worth it. However, that pain should be adequately managed. If your vet won't, I'd find one who will. What anesthesia is used? Will they be giving IV fluids? |
Roxxy is having the procedure at Banfield. According to what I remember and the detail sheet that they gave me she will be getting IV fluids and will be hooked to ekg. She's supposed to get an injection of acepromazine and Butorphanol and I think she said Propaphol. They said the blood work will be done tomorrow. They are supposed to give her something called Rimadyl for the pain, they say it's like aspirin. I asked if this would be enough and and she said yes. I asked if I could get a prescription for more if she needed it and they said ok but said she'd only need it for a day. I don't know, I just don't believe that. Since she goes to Banfield pet hosp, she's seen three Dr.s there. Most of the time she sees the same one. I asked all three about the dew claw. Two recommended removal and one said it wasn't necessary. The opinion in favor of seems to be that since it's only attached by skin, it could accidentally rip or become damaged. That's the only advice I had to go on so I figured it would be better to not take chances on future problems. I'm just not sure though-it sounds like you think she may not need to. I called them and asked to speak with the Dr to answer my questions and they said they'd have her call before she goes home. |
Those anesthetics aren't bad, but she has to be maintained on a gas. I assume they are using Isoflurane? Rimadyl is okay. Some of us prefer Metacam. Yes, she should have it for more than a day. I can't advise on whether or not the dewclaws should come out since I'm not a vet. Usually unless they are removed a few days after birth, they are left in unless there is a problem. Yes, they can get pulled and damaged by leaving them. All a matter of opinion... While it sounds like in this case they are doing a fair job, you should probably know that Banfield can be a very scary place for vet care. What they use varies by locations as do the doctors, obviously. Some are better than others. Some are downright horrific. Be very careful about what they are using and doing. It would be good to Google Banfield reviews. It is not somewhere I'd take my girl. |
I am sending prayers and good vibes your way :) My girl is having a surgery tomorrow too. I recommend you feel completely confident in your girls surgeon. If you don't, wait and find one you do. |
I agree with the others, you have to have complete trust in your vet. They have your baby in their hands. I pray that your little girl has a successful surgery and a quick easy recovery. |
Praying everything goes well. My Tessie was spayed and had baby teeth removed at the same time and she did great. She stayed overnight and the vet wrapped tape around her bandages to prevent her from pulling out the stitches. She wasn't in a lot of pain but we gave her the meds for a few days to make her comfortable. My Sassy will be spayed on June 14 she is 6 lbs and 8 months old. |
I will keep Roxxy in my prayers for a safe procedure. Most of mine had teeth pulled at time of spay and were fine. It takes a few days but they do bounce back quicker than you can imagine. I would ask for extra pain medicine. |
Thanks all for the advice and prayers. I went with Banfield because the day after I got her I noticed she was having problems pooping so I rushed her right there since it was a sunday. It turned out that the hair back there was matted and that's what caused the problem. But, since I went there, I was told about their wellness plan and spoke with a few people there who were happy with the care so I decided to go with it. A friend of mine had used them for years and felt good about the care there. So far I've been ok with them but Roxxy has just had preventive care so far. I will google them now. I will update everyone and am praying all goes well. |

My little 11 month old, 2.5# Phoebe was spayed & had 4 baby teeth pulled last Thursday. She slept most of Thursday evening, and seemed a little sore on Friday. After that it was VERY hard to keep her quiet! She wanted to run & play!! My vet gave her a pain injection, and Rimadyl for 4 days. It's a week today, and you would never know she had surgery. I too was very worried because she's so tiny..... I would think twice about continueing with Banfield. I've heard very negative reviews, but my main concern would be in seeing different vets there. I have a long term relationship with my vet, and trust him completely! |

I read the reviews last night so needless to say it's concerning. I did feel I may have rushed in when taking their plan but I think feedback from my friend played a part. I had planned on actually visiting this other Vet's office but since that office was closed and I wasn't sure what was wrong w/her I rushed off to Banfield because they were open. I was already considering changing once the plan was over, mostly because I'm not crazy about any kind of corporate healthcare. With only one exception she saw the same Dr. each time and I do like Dr. Wong. She always took a lot of time with her and answers all my questions(and being the over-protective paranoid mama that I am I go in there with a list of 'em, lol) I have to say we're never with her less than 30 mins, that's longer thans some of my Dr visits, lol. My main concern was for her tiny size, she's just now gained a few ozs and is 3.8 lbs. She's been dropped off. Please send good vibes. Thanks for everyone's response. |

Hoping all goes well. She will be sore for a few days but should bounce back quickly. My vet was the same way no pain meds. And I asked but was given none said she did not need them. I think she did. Small town old ways vets I guess. We got thru it but I know she was in pain for a few days. |
