Buster is home! We picked Buster up at 8:30 this morning and he's been sleeping since. There is another piece of hardware to keep the knee more stable. He carries the leg that was operated on but he did that last time. He put some weight on it when he went potty and drank some water. The object now is to keep him still. He's wearing his harness and leash with the leash wrapped around my arm for now. I hope the knee heals this time, the little guy deserves a break, no pun intended. |
It might take some time for him to use that leg. I think it varies from one pup to the other. I have had different results...some will start weight bearing the first week and some take weeks. I have seen pups limp and/or carry the leg for months. Try not to worry so much about the use of the leg .. it will come in time. We want them fixed right away but it does not happen that way. Best to let them rest imo. I let mine recover at their own pace...and have had much success doing that. I have never had to push a pup along the way to recovery. The only ones that have needed physical therapy were other problems...not simple ortho surgery. |
I am glad Buster is home. Pixie slept the first day or so home too. I think it took her a week to put weight on it and even up to 4 weeks after she would hold it up occassionaly. By 6 weeks post surgery she was using it like normal. I agree they all heal at their own pace. |
So glad your little Buster is back at home and hope things are going well for him today. |
How is he doing today? After Basil's splint was removed, he held his leg up occasionally for the first week as if the splint was still on. By week 2, no more. But week 3, no limp at all. By week 4, he is ready to rumble. Hope all works out for your little guy. Hardest part is keeping them from getting hyper and too active, even in an X-Pen |

Glad to hear Buster is doing well. Hope he fully recovers quickly so that he can chase Maggie and those birds soon! :) |
It is amazing how tough these little guys are, and how fast they can mend. It is now hard to believe he was in a splint! Thank God for great Vets and Specialists. |
I'm so sorry... I seem to have entirely missed this thread! Wow! You just can't seem to catch a break with your little ones... hope Buster is feeling better soon... keeping you all in my prayers.... |
Hope Buster heals in time and becomes normal as ever, I'm a bit worried with my yorkies in due time might need LP surgery also. Just praying it'll be okay. How old is Buster by the way? |
Awww Jeanie, glad to hear Buster is on the healing side. He'll definitely test your nerves... by wanting to run around...and jump. It does sound like he's doing well. Glad to hear it. Hang in there, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. :) Hugs. |
:animal36 I will be sending good wishes your way & prayers for his surgery. That is so hard on you, I hope that everything will go just great...:aimeeyork:animal-pa |
Oh I am so sorry to hear about your Buster. Poor baby to go through all that surgery and recovery and then to have to do it again. Poor Buster and poor mommy. I hope this surgery does the trick and he has a speedy and successful recovery. Best wishes |
