Please help
 

I am waiting for the vet' office to open, but in the mean while and am so worried. I have placed a posting in the general site and have decided to post one here. Our 8 mos. old is experiencing her first heat. The started on Thursday.
Since then she has been vomiting off and on. She has not kept any food down today or tonight and I have noticed the last 5 - 6 hours she is urinating approximately every hour. I have been giving her chicken broth that I made for her. She has also vomited 2 the chicken broth. I gave her some pumpkin puree, she didn't like it or want it but put about a tbsp in her mouth and 30 mins later she vomited that.
Can someone respond ASAP, I am so worried. It is 4 am and I will leave for the vet's office in a few hours.

It is normal for a dog to go off their feed during their heat. Mine has it worse some times than others, and is fairly lethargic for 1-3 days. I don't change her food, but I do monitor her intake during that time. As she doesn't feel like doing as much, I do expect her to be eating less.

As for vomiting, a little yellow bile could be a normal occurance in the morning if a pup hasn't eaten since earlier the last evening. I would try to feed a bit later in the evening to prevent this or offer a small meal before bedtime.

I think changing your pup's diet so much may have worsened the problem... just offer her the normal food and quit the bisquits and yogurt. Once they start vomiting meals, it's good to give their tummies a rest and not offer any food for 4 -12 hours (vets will say 24 hours, but I think that is too long esp for some so small), and small amounts of water after fasting. It's okay to go to chicken and white rice (1:1), small amounts, and the broth in small amounts would be okay, but count that as water when looking at total intake.

For now, check her gums, pink is good, moist not sticky is good. If she's pale, offer her a small amount of nutrical (dime sized, smear it on her gums). If she's not lethargic, and is acting more normal than not, it is probably okay to wait for your regular vet to open.

But if she is lethargic and not acting right, this long since the onset of her heat, it may be best to get her to an ER Vet. I can't tell what's best in any case through discriptions given online.

KJC Thank you for your reply. So, am I to understand that it is normal for them to have problems keeping their food down? How long is it considered safe for a dog not to eat or keep her food down? Also, why has she been urinating so often, is it due to the broth I been giving her? She has also not be going on her pad, she just does it where she is. in fact she went on the couch twice, which is not like her....thankfully we had some foresight and covered the couch with pads and then a sheet over them.
She is lethargic and am wondering how can one tell if she had low blood sugar.
If there is other information that might shed some light on this situation, please don't hestitate to ask.

If her gums are pale her sugar may be low. If you do not have Nutrical on hand, use pancake syrup... as she is lethargic, I would get some on her gums anyway.... right now.

Once a dog vomits food, if one keeps feeding them, they will continue to vomit and can become dehydrated.... no it is not normal for a dog in heat to vomit food. Yorkies do occasionally vomit bile (yellow/brown stuff) in the morning. This is different than vomiting food though.

Is she reponsive... will she get up and walk around? If not, get her to an ER Vet right away! (But put the syrup or even plain sugar on her gums first)

Kjc, thank you, I checked her gums and just above the teeth it is dark in colour and over that it is a light pink. I just gave her a dimes worth of pure maple syrup, she didn't quite know what it was but slowly she licked it from my hand. I had given her some pumpkin around 1ish this morning, she has never had it and didn't seem to like it but I got her to have a tbsp. She vomited that within the hour. Why is she vomiting??? Anyway after giving her the syrup she noticed the pumpkin in a bowl and just had a tiny bit. She is licking herself clean quite often and am wondering maybe the blood is upsetting her stomach?

Pumpkin is usually given for diarrhea or constipation.... I can't say why she is vomiting... she may need to be fasted a bit... the urinating is not normal... maybe a UTI... has she ever had a BAT test done? (Bile Acid Test).

Hope everything is okay. This sounds like more then just a heat cycle. Keep us posted on what the vet says. Like I said in a earlier post my female will throw up a little when she was in heat. But the peeing every hour we did not have. Poor little girl I hope she feels better real soon

Hello everyone, thank you very much for responding to my SOS.
We have taken Maya to the vet early this morning and have just heard that she may have an intestinal infection. She has had an xray to eliminate the possibility of an intestinal blockage and he thought she might possibly have pancreatitis,,,,,however at this point he feels it is mostly an infection of the intestines. She was fed and hasn't vomit....LOL, that always happens when they are at the vet...He is keeping her overnight and we are waiting for the blood results.

Glad to hear she's being treated and seems to be doing better:). Boy, coincidences like that can really throw you off can't they? Hope she has a speady recovery:)
