Mom freaking out just a bit! I lost a dog last March to what I believe to be HGE. He began exibiting symptoms in Oct of 2010 and died in March of 2011. Now his brother (9years old,his name is Buddie) from the same litter is exibiting the same symptoms. We are going to the vet in an hour for blood work. I know that there are some things that I can do diet wise at home to help, but dont know what they are. I would appreciate ANY suggestions. The only diet change lately is taking all of my dogs from Iams proactive (not a great food) to Wellness 5. We are still in the stage of 1/2 of each kind. I just started this last Friday. All of the other dogs love the Wellness, even the old man that hasn't eated dog kibble in 2months. Symptoms: shaking, tight tummy, not interested in food and Buddie is ALWAYS interested in food, mucus in stool (not blood as of yet). If I sit in the floor he will sit infront of me and just stare at me,this is what his brother did. Obviously trying to tell me something, this started yesterday and it took me until this morning to figure it out. So yes, I am freaking out just a bit. I leave town soon and will be leaving this dog in my daughters care,it is her dog. |

Sending prayers to you and Buddie. Best Wishes |
I am hoping Buddie is ok. I try to not vary their diet much at all. Cali has had 2 bouts of HGE and has a very sensitive tummy. I found that any kind of chews always caused tummy upsets. I only give them nylabones now. |
We came home with antibiotic for tummy and something to settle his tummy,no food until tomarrow morning. In 9years I have changed his food a few times, puppy to adult,to a lamb and rice (wont do that again he doesn't tollerate lamb it only took me 24hrs to figure it out),back to Eukanuba,to Iams and then to Wellness. The vet doesnt think that it is the food change. Like I posted before his twin brother died just last March with the same symptoms. Vet will call in the morning with the results. Thank you for your responses. |
Thank you for the caring responses. Buddies bloodwork came back normal and the meds seem to be helping. He will be the special baby in the house eating chic n rice for a few days (the other dogs will turn pea green). Then we will try transitioning him onto Wellness and if that doesn't work then we will be a 2 dog food family again. Whatever it takes. |
Glad to hear that he is doing ok. It is so hard when they are sick. |
Glad his blood work came back normal. |
