Please help SweetPea I hope someone here can help me. I have a 6 yr old female yorkie named SweetPea. A few months ago she started drinking mass quantities of water and immediately urinating. We took her to our vet who took blood and urine and found nothing wrong. We took her to another vet who took blood and urine, found nothing wrong and said they suspected Cushings but they didn't want to treat her so they sent us to a specialist who took blood and urine, found nothing wrong and put her on medication for Cushings. She was on it 3 days and started shaking and panting so we had to take her off. The vet's only other suggestion is for a MRI ($2,000) and spinal tap ($500) to see if it is a tumor and put her on steriods which will make her urinate even more. We are at a total loss where to go from here. Has anyone out there dealt with this with their yorkie? Thanks so much for any advice. |
I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you. I'm assuming one of the things they ruled out was diabetes - right? Bumping this so others who might have suggestions might see it. |
First, welcome to YT! I'm sorry your SweetPea is sick :(. My Wylie has Atypical Cushings, so I know what that's like. It's a very tough disease to diagnose. So, did she have an LDDS test or ACTH Stim test to help test for Cushings? What med did they put her on? Btw, there are several different meds she can try if it's Cushings. Are there any other symptoms at all? Ie, hair loss, muscle wasting, pot belly, heat intolerance, huge appetite...etc? Did you take her to an Internist, btw, for the specialist vet? The other things to look into is Diabetes Insipidus...not to be confused w/ Diabetes Mellitus. DI is more complicated to test for than DM. If DI is suspected, don't restrict water *at all*, as they can die from water restriction if they have DI. |

Sweet Pea She doesn't have the normal symptoms of Cushings - no hair loss, no appetite, the only thing is copious drinking and urinating. She has had 3 blood tests which show nothing wrong, ie no diabetes. I am assuming they have done every test as the specialist said they had done every test on her body and she suspected it was a tumor in the brain associated with Cushings but they don't seem to really want to help us. I will have to look at the name of the medicine she couldn't tolerate and write back when I get home. |
Wylie's Mom - the name of the medicine they put Sweet Pea on that she couldn't tolerate was Trilostane, 5 mg. We were told there were two medicines for Cushings and this was the one most tolerated of the two. What were Wylie's symptoms when he was diagnosed and what medicine did they put him on? I'm not sure if the specialist is a internal medicine doctor - we took her to one of the best vet clinics in our county and they sent us to the specialist. Sweet Pea just gets weaker every day. |
