Oy, it's 3am and Veruca is sick again!
 

Hi everyone, I'm so upset. Fri night at 4am I woke up to loud barking from Veruca in her crate in the living room. She had vomited up her dinner and her treat I gave her before bed for rolling over. She then vomited a quarter sized amount of bile twice within two mins of each other. I cleaned up her mess, offered her water (she took some), walked her (she went both normally), and set up the couch. She slept on my legs through the night. On Sat, I skipped her breakfast to rest her stomach, and while I was out my husband called to say she vomited bile again (around 2p), but she has gone to the bathroom normally and taken some water. I called the vet and they told me to offer her Nutrical or honey(which she wouldn't take) and to monitor her since she was drinking. She vomitted again at 5p after refusing some of her dogfood so we took her to the vet. She hadn't eaten any toys, foreign objects, or bones that we're aware of. The vet examined her, said she didn't think her abdomen was painful, and did a fecal test (negative), gave her sub-cutaneous fluids, and a shot of Cerenia. When the medicine kicked in she seemed to be doing great, back to normal. I gave her Nutrical an hour after the vet and then boiled chicken and rice for dinner, both of which she eagerly accepted. She also was drinking water, but 4 hours later she has been moaning, and a clear fluid came out of her bum (she's scooting her bum on the ground - which she never does), and she's drooling alot (her beard is saturated - also never happens). I called the vet again at 2:45a and they said I could bring her back. But she seems to have settled down in a makeshift bed I made for her on the floor next to mine. Should I let her sleep and bring her in if she wakes up again? My husband said she could be drooling from the stress of feeling uncomfortable. Is this familiar to anyone??

Also more details... Fri afternoon Veruca walked a lot more than usual in the Florida heat, but she had water. I'm wondering if that could have contributed...

The clear liquid from her bum and the drooling would worry me. I know, in the middle of the night these decisions are so hard to make for a sick little one! I think I would take her in.

I would be concerned of pancreatitis. How old is your little one?

She is one year and 3 months. The awful part is that she just had her well check and shots on 4/25.

Yea, I think I would take her back. She sounds like a young dog who has no known health issues, so this would concern me. Cerenia is an anti-emetic so that probably gave her an appetite again, but the moaning, diarrhea (clear liquid), drooling...I think I would take her back in.

She may need an antibiotic, further tests.

the drooling and stuff sounds like when my Lexi had a allergic reaction to something still not sure what it was. But two shots later and some childrens benaydrl she was much better. But she did not have anything coming out of her bum. I would take her back for sure if you haven't yet.

Any news on Veruca?

Ruca slept through the night and drank a little, we're on our way to the ER vet now. I am worried about pancreatitis too.

Glad to hear she is alright. You may want to ask about the pancreatitis. Could be just an infection (needing antibiotics) or other things, but it sounds like when my Cricket had pancreatitis - she had upset belly and moaned a lot. They have a test they can do in the office for it.

Veruca update
 

Hi everyone, I just heard from the vet and Veruca is resting comfortably in a crate with IV fluids and Cerenia. Her x-rays showed air in her stomach and intestines, no foreign objects, and no inflamed organs. Her fecal from yesterday was negative. Her blood tests for pancreatitis were negative (though the vet suggested this could be a false negative). The vet thinks she has a gastroenteritis/mild case of pancreatitis and wants her to stay overnight for monitoring. Basically if she stops vomiting and diarrhea she can come home some time tomorrow. They're going to try and give her a little bland GI diet tonight and see if she can hold down food and also if she will take water. This was the weekend vet, and another doctor will pick up her case at 6am tomorrow and should be calling me in the morning with an update.

So even though Veruca's blood tests were negative, what things can I do to prevent pancreatitis or stomach trouble in the future? Thanks for your kind thoughts and prayers!

Glad to hear no inflamed organs on x-ray. I know, it's terrifying when the little ones get sick, especially at night and on weekends!

I'm sure your vet will give you pancreatitis instructions when she leaves. My little one had to stay on a bland diet. My vet prescribed Royal Canine GI formula (but there are different versions of this by different manufacterers). I was no longer allowed to give her cheese treats or anything high in fat. Also, I just recently learned Beggin Strip treats are high in fat. The pancreas is the organ that assists in fat digestion, that's why they put them on a low-fat diet to prevent this in the future. The diet really helped with Cricket's pancreatitis and belly upset problems.

We'll keep praying your little one has a good night and is able to keep her food in her! Let us now how she is doing (and we'll be praying for mom and dad too; it sounds like they had an eventful, worrisome weekend!).

What are you feeding her and what are her treats, Laci had a bout of pancratitis around her age and did the drooling, loose bowl movements. I think it was from a bully stick. I used a low fat food for about 6 months, she is fine now. Hope all is well!

low fat food nothing fatty for the pancreatitis, she will probably on a bland diet for a fre days after all of this, baby food works make sure it is the kind with no onion powder in it, chester was on that after gastroenteritis last year for no reason, boiled chicken and rice as well good luck with your baby

Pancreatitis, especially a mild, acute case, is usually caused by treats or table scraps. Like others said, they'll probably give you a low-fat diet suggestion or possibly instructions for low-fat home-cooking for a few days.

For the future, be carefull what treats you give - NOTHING from the grocery store (things like beggin strips, snasages etc. bad bad bad all the way around). Also, I know ALOT of people who like to give their dogs the cut off fat or skin from chicken or other meat (a relative of mine just called me this Fri. describing symtoms her Beagle-mix was having that sounded like mild pancreatitis, sure enough, they had given her the fat from their steaks the night before)- BAD, especially for a Yorkie or other tiny dog. Cheese - very common "treat", not good (although a low-fat cheese will be ok for most dogs, but only in small amounts and not too frequently). Just today, my aunt was about to give her Yorkie some skin from her chicken and I grabed her arm and made her give him a bit of the breast meat instead lol.

So the vet called to say that Veruca hasn't had any vomiting or diarrhea overnight and is holding down tiny bits of food. If she continues to do well she can come home later today. The vet said she'd call back around 2p. So hopefully, I'll get my cutie back later today :-)

Great news! I read recently someone having similar issues with their yorkie and feed stella and chewys treats. Then I came across a site on another dog forum and same with those treats. Now im curious.......

I am glad to hear Veruca is improving and I know she will feel even better when she is back with you.

Good news! I had to switch treats and food for my Molly when she had pancreatitis. Low fat is the only way to go.. Keep us posted...

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all your kind thoughts and messages. I brought Veruca home and aside from a shaved leg (her IV) she looks great! She is acting more normal and was excited to see all her friends in our building. And she pottied normally outside :-)

Veruca's plan is:
2 days of Hill's prescription i/d Gastrointestinal diet (4 little meatballs that I rolled up every 6 hrs), if no vomiting/diarrhea wean back to normal food
Purina FortiFlora supplement sprinkled over her food 1x/day for 30 days
Cerenia 16mg (1/4 tablet 1x/day for 3 days)

She was hungry for her dinner and is now sleeping comfortably. :-)
