Is diarrhea in yorkshire terriers normal? Hello, I have a five month old yorkshire terrier. I have had her for three months now and ever since I have had her she has had diarrhea for at atleast two days a week.These episodes can last between half a day and two days. She also has blood in her diarrhea. She isnt a big eater. She has lots of energy and is very happy though. I have been to the vets many times about her diarrhea and the first two times I was given anti diarrhea medication and worming tablets but after that I have just been told to keep feeding her regularly small meals and that diarrhea is normal in yorkshire terriers. I have never had yorkshire terriers but find it hard to believe that it is normal for this breed to diarrhea so often especially when it has blood in it as well. She is on special food the vet recommends and that still doesnt work. Even when she is on just chicken the upset tummys still come. Basically I wanted to know if it was normal for the breed and whether I am being overprotective or whether I should keep taking her to the vets? Many thanks, Jenny |
These little guys can have very sensitive tummys and lots of good allergies. You can try boiled rice with ground turkey with no seasoning and see if her tummy settles. You want to make sure you are feeding a high quality food as well. Welcome to YT. We would love to see a pic of your furbaby! |
No its not normal. You need to go to a different vet. The only time mine have diahrea is when they are sick and its never ongoing. There is no reason to be dealing with it all the time and it can dehydrate your dog |
I guess the first question is , What are you feeding her? Do you notice the diareaha after she has had a certain treat, bully stick, food? Is anyone giving her table food? Treats, changes in her food, bully sticks can all cause this... Her food may not be agreeing with her tummy ! |
Diarrhea is NOT normal in any breed and any vet who would say such a ridiculous thing needs to go back to school. You deff need to be looking for a new vet ASAP. Blood in the stool is also NOT normal so you NEED to find a GOOD vet that will work with you in finding answers as to why your baby is having these issues. Has your current "so called vet " rechecked the stool to be sure all worms are gone ? Most likely the issue is diet related, so you will have to try diff things until you find something that agrees with your babies system. In the mean time you should refrain from any & all treats as you will not know if it's the treats or the food causing the problem. |
I agree with the last post that diarrea is not normal for your puppy. I would definitely go to another vet and get your puppy checked out. Also you do not want your baby to get dehydrated from diarrea it can happen fast. Hope this helps and your puppy gets better. |
Two days a week?!?! No that's not normal. If I had diarrhea for two straight days I would be miserable and think something is going on. The only time Gizmo had belly issues was when we changed his food, he got treats that he wasn't use to, and when he was on antibiotics. Diarrhea can be a sign of a parasite which can be very, very dangerous for any dog, especially a young small dog. You need to tell your vet to to back to flipping burgers and stop pretending to be a vet. I hope your fur baby feels better. Try to find a different vet and see if you can bring a sample in asap. Find a new vet that knows toy breeds and hopefully well knowledgable in Yorkies. It could be a parasite they couldn't find if you took in a stool sample which is the case at least 90%of the time although they will never admit to that. It could be the diet, she cannot digest something you are feeding. I do not give my yorkies tinned food of any kind anymore as the results were much what you were seeing. Tinned food seems to always have liver in it and they cannot tolerate liver. I mince up some cooked chicken breast and mix that in with their kibble for breakfast and dinner. I leave dry kibble down during the day. I feed Natural Balance Ultra to about 1/4 Orijen adult formula. |
Not normal but common. There's a difference. Tallulah has been going through this for 10 weeks - except no blood in the stool. We've done multiple stool tests for different parasites as well as blood tests for some scarier problems - all negative. The only thing so far that has stopped the diarrhea is Albon. She is thriving, and if it weren't for the diarrhea I would think everything was normal. Dr. And a consulting vet each independently suggested the same course of treatment and tests until we get it resolved. It takes patience and a fair amount of expense, but then I knew what I was committing to when I got her so there you go. Here's hoping we both get answers soon and that the problems are easily resolved. |
I read that stress can also cause diarrhea. We sometimes get little lizards on our deck, and Ian loses his mind when he sees one. He is totally obsessed with trying to catch one, but thank goodness he never has. We are dealing with diarrhea also. This is day two; my hubby made an appointment for him to be checked out today. |

My yorkie Ziva has rarely had any problems, but Lucy,10 year wheaten terrrier has always had digestive issues. the final diagnosis: very sensitive to most foods and treats ( corn,wheat, tomatoes...) The best diet yet has been added probiotics and dry kibble with enzymes (Taste of the Wild- salmon, the other varieties have things that bother her in them!)If someone sneaks her a bit off their plate I know it! |
