Vomiting I hoping someone may have some thoughts on what may be going on. One of my rescues, she is around 9 years old and has only been with me for a couple years. She was a puppy mill mommy and Im sure didnt have the best of care for first 7 years. Sorry this is long but I want to try to get the details because its kinda weird and random, she is feeling fine otherwise and is eating, pooping and acting perfectly normal otherwise. She has been vomiting on and off for about 2.5 weeks. Most often its not food its just yellow foam, she seems to only vomit once then not do it again for a couple of days. She first did it after we went for a walk so I thought maybe she ate something at the park, then 2 days later again only once, then the following day, after that probably 2 more days before she vomited again. So then I went to boiled chicken and rice for 4 days....slowly put her back on her regular food and she seems fine and then after 1 week of no vomit she puked last night again. I have them on wellness core and am thinking maybe she just isnt doing well on it anymore( although its not usually the food she pukes up), thinking of maybe switching to acana graaslands. Also wellness had a cat food recall so this freaks me out a bit but my other 2 dogs seem fine so I doubt its the food. We have had an ultrasound, blood and urine check....all is good. Im trying to not worry but its hard :( Anyone know what may be cause this? Any thoughts are appreciated. |
This isn't after long periods of not eating, right? I'd also be looking at dietary intolerance, especially since the chicken and rice went well. Switching to something with a different protein and carb source (not high fat) wouldn't hurt. Because testing has already been done, everything is probably fine. If the food switch doesn't work, then drugs and maybe more testing is what I'd think about... Since she has already been to the vet, did they mention anything about an intestinal diet trial? |
Alice and my Akita will both ocassionaly vomit "yellow foam" if they haven't eaten recently enough, such as if there's a late start to the morning for some reason, or they're being really picky and don't eat their food. It's bile and 99% of the time just a sign of a really empty tummy. Can you feed her smaller amounts more frequently? That should help:) |
Thanks Ellie for the response :) I have always free fed and and they usually eat in the morning and again at night on their own. She is very skinny and seems to eat alot more than the others and always has. I thought I saw her eating around 7 last night but her vomit was pure bile no food. Im going to pay very close attention to her eating. They did not mention a intestinal diet trail...what it it? |
Ziva had similar bouts a few months back- I was trying to pin it down enough to take her to the vet and my groomer said ,"too much greens"- I was giving her a few green beans (cooked) here and there, some days she could eat them and some days she would throw up yellow foam about 12 hours later. No more greens and hasn't had an episode since! |
It's just a veterinary diet that the intestines "like" better than other foods. Chicken and rice would do something similar, but that can only be fed for a couple weeks without balancing it. Also I forgot to ask. Are you sure she is heaving when this happens or does she just open her mouth and out it comes? |
She heaves and looks very uncomfortable! I dont suppliment htere diets with anything but wellness core kibble, she has been on wellness since I got her 2 years ago. Ellie Im trying to decided between acana prarie (chicken and potato), acana grasslands (lamb, fish and rice) I also have access to origen. I beleive the main protien in wellness core is chicken? |
Also I went to a homeopathic store and they gave me a tincture of slipperyelm, licorice root, plantain leaf and marshmallow root to give her twice a day to help her tummy. Also a digestive enzyme powder for their food. She has been on these since last fri. |
Hopefully she just became sensitive to one of the ingredients. Maybe she is developing some IBD or the like. Yorkies' intestines aren't the best. I'm definitely not an expert, but I would pick a protein source other than what is in the food she has gotten for the last two years (and a grain if you don't go gra free). |
What would heaving or not heaving indicate? |
Quote:
Not heaving means she is probably just spitting up (regurgitating) which would indicate more of an esophageal issue. |
Are you talking about Daisy or Maria? |
