Groomer mishap Hello Everyone, I'm seeking some advice. My dog Tobey was knicked by the groomers on both his hind legs just above the pad of his feet on Fri. I didn't notice until sat, it was spot bleeding. It's not a lot of blood but after he goes out for walks he tends to bleed a little. I think it's because it's kind of on his heel/ achillies tendon area (if he had one). It's still seeping a little today, but only after he goes on walks. I cleaned it and have been applying neosporin to it. The groomers I took him to is a well known place in the area and it wasn't his first time there. I called them but they're closed sun-mon. Tobey acts fine. I've only seen him lick it twice. Should i take him to the vet? Can you apply a liquid bandage type product on a dog? Please advise. PS i'm posting a pic to our profile page photo library for reference. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...ctureid=107490 Thank you so much! |
its odd that its still bleeding today if it was just a little nick. I would call the groomer first thing tomorrow morning to tell them about it, then make an appointment to see the vet just to check it out. if its still oozing every now and then I worry about infection. Keep the area clean. You can put some triple antibiotic ointment on it for now. Its weird that the groomer would have nicked both back legs. |

Poor Tobey. That looks sore. I would call the vet and let them check it out so it doesn't get infected. I don't know if you can use a liquid bandage on dogs. I hope you get in touch with the groomer to let them know what happened. Hope Tobey feels better!! |
You can use liquid bandage, and actually would be very useful for the area that it's in...BUT, since this hasn't just happened, and he's been walking on them, take him to the vet first, because you do not under any circumstances want to seal those cuts with a possible infection inside. If there is any infection, the vet will want it to be able to drain, and the liquid bandage would prevent that. And I agree with another post...especially with where the cuts occured, you should have been informed when you picked him up. That should be brought to the attention of the management of that groomer, if it is an establishment with more than one. That's not just an "oops", that's a health issue that was not reported to timely. Hope he's feeling better soon! ~Twitterpate |

They scraped it raw! That's terrible. I hope it will heal without any problem. |
That looks like it hurts... Poor guy. I can't believe your groomer didn't tell you. I don't know how she couldn't have noticed, he must have jumped when she did it. I would call the groomer asap and treat it with neosporin. |
Thank you Thank you to everyone for your suggestions, sympathy, and encouragement. I'll let you guys know where and what the groomer is after I talk to them tomorrow.:) |
The groomer nicked our little Lilly on the foot and we didn't notice until she developed a staph infection in her foot. Keep a very close eye on it and if you feel it is getting infected at all, get to the vet asap. Hopefully you won't have to go through what we did. Poor little thing was miserable. |
Clipper Burn So didn't know that there was even a term for this, but this just means that Groomers should be a little more gentler and aware of the job they're doing. So I took Tobey back to the groomers to show them what happened and maybe take them to the vet. They said that skinning was "Clipper burn". It can happens when your dog has extra draw skin/paws and they go in "hard" in those tight and hard to reach grooming areas. To me this seems like A. the clippers too hot and they need to let it cool, their should be a guard mechanism for this kind of thing. The groomer was super nice and remorseful and offered to pay my vet bill before I got there if I needed to go. However once I got to the Puppy Shop Boys Pet store and groomers in Costa Mesa, CA they told me that it was "just clipper burn" and reassured me he would be fine. They cleaned and dressed the wounds and gave me some care instructions and sent me off. They DID NOT offer my money back. I guess I could have asked, but I felt like it wasn't worth the $40 and left. I'm sure they would have given me a free bath/grooming had I asked, but I'm not sure I can go there again. They may be nice, have cute puppies in store, BUT they skinned my dogs ankles and the last time I went they shaved my Yorkie when I just went in for a bath and face trim. OmG! :( So now I'm looking for: 1. A nice, affordable, clean and caring groomer in the Orange County, CA area. 2. How to remedy my dogs extra dry paws? The front paws are less so, but the rear paws feel dry and callousy, kinda like mild sand paper. Any suggestions? |

1. Don't know any groomers in Orange County. 2. Rough Paws - Bag Balm....buy it at the pharmacy.... |
As a retired groomer, I know we all make mistakes...but you TELL the client what happened...then tell them how to treat it or see the vet..and the groomer pays. |
@Mardelin: thanks for the advice, so I should continue to keep an eye on it? What are some signs I should look for if there's an infection other then redness and puss? What if my dog tries to lick the bag balm off his feet? Is it safe for them? Thanks everyone! |

I would be livid if my groomer did not tell me they nicked my dog , and not only once but twice. I actually accidently did this to my Suzi when trying to trim hair off her ear. She let out the biggest cry. and then tiny spots of blood . She was fine , thankfully, and her ear was fine, you could not even see it, and it did not bleed off and on like yours are. Yep, definately take your little one to the vet asap. |
