Tila's tail When I took Tila to get her distemper on Thursday, I got her tail checked because she was chewing at it. The vet looked it over and said it looked like it had a scratch I'm thinking my cat Pemberley scratched her, because he likes to hide behind things and swat at the them when they walk by. She said it didn't look infected yet, but gave me a cone and a week of antibiotics and to put the cone on her if she keeps at it. The vet also asked if she's been wormed, which she has been recently. The vet said some dogs will chew at their tail when they have worms. She also said it could be because of her anal glands. I've checked her poop and there hasn't been anything in there. Her anal glands haven't been expressed in awhile. I noticed tonight that Tila has a little bald spot on her tail , not quite bald but you can see it. I did have to cut out a nice sized tangle from that area though because when she was nibbling on it she worked up a tangle. She hasn't been chewing at it for the last couple days. Will the hair grow back okay? Should I put the cone on her even if she isn't nibbling her tail anymore? Is there anything I should be looking out for? Am I worrying too much? |
I'm sorry I can't help with any advice, but I want to say that I hope Tila gets better very quickly. Her hair should most likely grow back unless there is an underlying cause that I'm not aware of. |
The hair should grow back unless there's a scar on her tail. If she's leaving it alone, you can try taking the cone off, but put it back on if she starts scratching again. Did the vet check her anal glands to see if they were full? I'd also take a stool sample in for them to check for worms, you can't always tell by looking at their poop. |
Thanks. I think I will cover all my bases and take in a stool sample to get checked, to be sure. |
just a thought, this happened to maddie--(may not be your case) same exact thing was going on with maddie, and we thought anal glands, this went on for months. she kept chewing on her tail and it had a little sore on it (maybe from the biting and chewing) well after further investigation from my vet--maddies tail wasnt docked correctly (or maybe didnt heal right) she had a small amount of hair growing on the inside of her tail under the skin--basically like ingrowin hairs. she had to have her tail redocked.ever since we had it done, we have had no problems--and it wasnt her anal glands. like i said this may not be whats going on with tila, but might be worth having ur vet check it. hope your baby feels better soon!;) |
