I am glad to read this story because I always wondered about things like that happening to my Yorkie. mine is only 2.5 lbs so I worry about bats at night and these larger birds that fly around in backyard in Japan. I will definitely be more watchful! |

Hawks are capable of carrying off a small dog, I've read true stories of that happening. I just think you have to protect your pet by some other means, if at all possible. Shamrocks hubby......that was an capturing story.....now go buy your wife something sweet to make up for hijacking her account:) |
If this story is true, and my pet was in danger.........id shoot the nawk as well; however, I dont think the bird would have been that dumb to attack him with you at your dogs side. He should have been surpervised colsely outside. Hawks are predators and you cant blame it. If he would have attempted to attack with uou present, id shoot it too. Otherwise, no. |
I really enjoyed the story about Noo-Noo, I really think you should be writing Romance books, great job. Sorry your wife is mad at you. Maybe you can make it up to her with a trip to the romantic beaches in Mexico. |

For the record....I don't believe the story of the OP for one second. |
We have hawks here, but common sense takes over for me and I'm by my baby's side regardless if I see a hawk or not. I'm all for defending yourself and God giving dominion over animals, however it's like going into an ocean and blaming a shark for attacking you. No offence, but you went into the hawk's territory. You're in the country, his turf. Therefore, you are the one responsible for making sure your baby is safe in his turf. The hawk was doing what his instincts tell him i.e. small prey = food. Also, I was reading the story and noticed that you said the hawk flew into a tree. So, if I come a swinging down from your pine tree and look at the Yorkie, are you going to shoot me as well? A little over dramatic, but still. Use your brain! I hope the DNR doesn't slap your ignorant butt with a fine for killing a protected species, but hey may it'll teach you a lesson. Take some responsibility into your own hands, watch your baby while in a rural area (duh) and hope to God a snake, you know the snake that the hawk could have caught and killed, doesn't go after your baby. *shakes head in disgust* |
I don't believe a word of the original story either, but I know that hawks can kill and fly a distance with a 5lb dog, and I also know that if one were after my 5lb baby, it would be it's last flight. We have a pretty big one that lights in an oak in our .25 acre yard right in town. Whitney is never out alone...precautions of course. Osprey are also an issue around here, and my MIL had to fight one off of her 5lb shorkie while she was taking her out to potty in her yard, so I still feel uneasy when I see it, even when she's on her leash. I'd feel sick if one swooped on her, and I wouldn't be above killing it and burying it to hide the evidence. |
I am a registered Bar 9 Sharpshooter....I would have sniped that bird right out of the tree....any threat to my boys will be taken care of:bravo: |

Owl swoops down to attack dog on leash | NWCN.com | Washington News Staying by your dogs side doesn't guarantee safety. Anyone remember the guy who posted a few years ago after his yorkie (who was on the end of a leash) was taken by a coyote? I am always afraid of something taking off with one of my two, and they are giants compared to a 4 lb baby. If any wild animal were stalking my babies, I think I'd happily send dh out to eliminate the risk. |
We have hawks and owls here. We never let the dogs outside alone except Carlo. I would love to see the bird that could carry 135 pounds away. We also have Coyotes and other critters in the woods here. If I shot a protected species, and I would if I felt it was a danger to a family pet, I would not go writing it up on YT. I learned that from one of my old Wild Hog adventures. Next you will tell me you kill TX Fire Ants! |

I really hope this is a joke, Maggie's Daddy. I'm not laughing. The hawk deserves to live in your neighborhood just as much as you do. It is your job to protect your dog by keeping her on a leash when she goes outside. Or build a hawk proof enclosure in your yard. |
Funny we never heard if this was real from the OP. |
Dogs Attacked By Hawks - Boston News Story - WCVB Boston I leave a hose on and attached to the house in the backyard and a baseball bat at my front door...just in case. I would only use both to scare off the attacker. |
Yes, I know the whole food chain theory, but I'd still snipe that thing out of the tree....it doesn't have to do a thing, the idea it's there is enough of a threat for me to take action. |

I don't know if I believe the story or not but whatever it was it was entertaining. I like the followup posts even better. I live out in Long Island New York and so far the biggest bird we've seen was a pigeon. |
I really hope this post is a bunch of crap. I just want to say it's a good thing no one knows where you live Something as SIMPLE as a pen with anything over the top will protect your yokies, everyone know that a hawk and eagle need to swoop and keep going. They cannot stop grab and go I'm DONE with this site except my friends in the Photography and that post Sparklingbluyorkies.com |
One thing you can do and it's legal lol.Is take two foil pie plate. place the back to back nail them in a few places where you take you furbaby out. The noice from these loose plates plus added with the bright sunshine on them has been known to deter them from your place. It's worth a shot. reach up and place them as high as you can. |
I want to add from my experiance Hawks cant pick up cats or a yorkie for that matter. Hell I've seen them unable to pick up a squirrel. Their game is much smaller not something that can hurt them back |

I just watched this video, it is so sad. Thank God the dog survived. I let my dogs on the deck and Sassy only weighs 6 lbs. I am going to watch them more closely. They are never in the yard alone without a leash. I see Hawks all the time, we live beside 20 acres of mostly woods and creeks and our home is on 5 acres. I saw a coyote beside our garage early one morning about a month ago. |

Although I don't think the OP's story is true, I know that our little ones need to be protected from all kinds of preditors. We use a doggie door for convience, but it leads directly to a covered enclosure (sort of like a huge chain link box). This works great for us, it allows my gang to go out whenever they need to, and I know they are safe. |
