Something wrong ? Gizmo my 5 month old perfect yorkie is having a problem with what I think is his jaw?? Almost Every time gizmo yawns it trembles and doesn't Close until it shivers shut . We took him to the Vet and she sent him right to the hospital thinking that there was something stuck in his little throat . But when we arrived at the hospital gizmo seemed to stop doing the jaw shivering and they ruled out something being stuck and said it was only a sore throat ? They said to watch for any vomiting which could be a sign of a blockage if he did have something stuck and got it down. I have a hard time believing it's a sore throat . Did this happen to anyone else ? Help! |
If your vet could not determine herself if something was stuck in your pup's throat and sent you to an ER, I honestly would find a better vet. The ER didn't sound like much help either. Has your pup been neutered? Is he retaining baby teeth? I have read of many different causes for jaw shaking, including dental problems (broken tooth), unexplained behavior when sniffing, and seizures. Shaking in general is often a sign of pain. If your pup continues to shake, observe what else is going on, and go to another vet. |
thanks! we are obviously changing vets. a back tooth fell out today. excited, we were hoping that that was why his jaw was going crazy. but unfortuntly he is still doing the crazy jaw trembling. he does not seem to be in any pain , he had one bowel movement today. im just going to watch him close and in another week if it is still happening im going to go to another vet. thanks for getting back to me! |
Aww, I have a Gizmo too! Poor little guy. My brother's dog did something similar to that, and when they put him under to do his dental, he ended up having a 4in thorn stuck in his gum line. However, I wonder if he possibly choked on one of his teeth and then got it down. But I'm not a vet, and I think you need to get to a new vet asap for preventative measures. Poor little guy. Keep us updated! Sending prayers! |
I agree with Taryn, don't wait. Find another vet ASAP. Is there anything else unusual in his behavior? Does he seem lucid when his jaw shakes? Are his eating habits the same and is he as active? Keep in mind, Yorkies often hide pain or they don't show it the way humans do. |
We figured out that his top two molars are loose and coming in and that's why his jaw is doing the weird shivering ! Gizmo is actually I'n the hospital now with an obstructed bowel. They gave him barrium to make him try to pass the blockage and I jus called and everything is going in the right direction (out) ! But thank god for his jaw shattering or we would never know about his bowel obstruction ! Thanks for all the great advice and feedback ! So glad my little boy will be feeling better Tom! |

Same thing started happening to my little yorkie Hermes:yorkieboy: since yesterday. He yawned and his jaw started trembling. He kepts yawning and it would tremble for about six seconds. He is also 5 months and teething. I noticed that two of of his molars (on opposite sides) are getting pushed down by his incoming teeth. I called the vet in the morning and they said they'd get back to me. They told me it appears to be normal, but to keep an eye out for it. That if I feel like it's a problem to make an appt. so they can look into possible causes like neural issues. |
He has beeing eating and pottying as usual. I'm so glad I found this thread; I hope this is only cause of his teeth and that it goes away once they fall out. |

happy he is doing well! |
Thank you so much for the concerns and comments.:hearts33: It turns out instead of one tooth being pushed at a time, it was two molars being pushed out on one side. We were playing and I guess that loosed up what I thought was one tooth and he was going crazy trying to get it out. He kept trying to chew it out and then even used his paw to somehow 'help' his efforts. I tried to see if I could help him, but he refused. I just sat there and tried to calm him down. . then to my surprise, two little teeth fell out. Those fell out yesterday and that seemed to ((possibly)) eleminate the jaw trembling. He has the teeth on the other side being pushed out too, so I hope they come out soon so he won't be uncomfortable. |
