Gabby's teeth... help!!! Gabby is a very active 5 months old yorkie. Today we noticed that her upper baby teeth are still there and her permanent teeth are growing behind them. Why is that happening? Is it dangerous? We will take her to the vet to get checked. I would like to know what the vet will do for her. Also, I would like to know how to brush her teeth. It is ok for her to swallow the tooth paste? what is the best kind to buy? Please help us! Thanks! |
Hello and welcome to YT! It is quite common for yorkies to retain their baby teeth and have a double row of teeth. Vets will normally recommend that you have it done at the time of their spay, thus only having to be put under once. By that time, she may lose some of the teeth on her own. Of my 3, one lost all hers on her own, the next needed 4 pulled, and then came Faith. She had 14 pulled at the time of her spay. Play lots of tug of war type games with your baby and hopefully that will help to loosen some up. Also, chew sticks should help too. Best wishes to you! |

It is normal to have double teeth and they will be removed at the time of spay or neuter (about 6-7 months old). As for toothpaste - only use a pet toothpaste. I like the CET dental by Virbac products. We use Vanilla mint flavor but they do have other flavors as well. This is the one we buy - ![]() To brush her teeth, use a soft baby toothbrush and let her lick a small amount of the toothpaste off the brush and encourage her with all kinds of praise. Every time she accepts the toothbrush, reward her with praise and treats. work your way up to her allowing you into her mouth and gently brush her teeth and gums. Oh and don't forget to tell her what you are doing. I always tell them what we are doing. |
GOOD advice!! We use the Virbac toothpaste too. We just started getting the Virbac Dental chews. The kids LOVE them! All my kids had a couple baby teeth removed at spay/neuter time. I think we waited until Mia & Max were like 7 months old. |
