Mercy bitting her hair out and scratches her ear madly My 6- months old female yorkie is bitting/pulling her hair out, patches of boldness on her body. Also she scratches her left ear madly until she bleeds. She rubs her ear on the carpet. Showed her to the vet and vet has given antibiotics! I have lost trust on the vet as her skin condition hasn't been changed since first visit. She has also stopped eating. Only eats once a day with fuss. Was thinking to c another vet don't know what to do:( |
i would go see another vet. presto kept scratching his ear and it was an ear infection but the vet prescribed ear drops which seemed to help and he was better in 2-3 days. Can it be food allergies? i would feed her something she likes maybe try boiled chicken or yogurt rice, something filling. I hope ur baby feels better soon *hugs* |
You are on the right track - don't keep trusting that vet. Get your poor baby to anothe vet and even a determatological consult. I itch from some medication I have to take sometimes and it is miserable!!! |
I would find a new vet ASAP. This deff sounds like an allergy situation & if so she probably has yeast so antibiotics aren't going to help. |
A new vet is in order, especially if she is not eating. I have a dog with severe allergies and she has never refused food. This concerns me, and you need a vet who will address all the issues. Good luck. |
Find a new vet asap. Did the vet give out antibiotics w/out doing a skin scrape/smear? The cells have to be looked at under scope to even determine if it's bacterial, or if there is also the possibility of yeast. Are pollens really high in your area right now? Did the itching start w/ the pollen season? |
My Moe has skin issues and had a terrible yeast problem in his ears when we first got him. Our vet took a swab from within his ears and a skin scrape before she did anything else. Afterwards she flushed his ears, gave us ear drops, oral* & ointment steroids, oral anitibiotics, and a prescription shampoo. We had to go back for a recheck several times (no office call charge - only products). His skin got better right away but his ears had to be flushed again and she gave us an ear flush to use. We also tried the grain free Merricks dry food but we didn't see any noticable difference after using it for several months. Unfortunately, we resumed using Science Diet. :) But yes, I prefer a vet to run some tests prior to taking any action. There's just too many things that it can be. No sense in treating them for something they "might" have. Hope your baby feels bette soon. It's so hard to watch them be miserable. *if I remember correctly - the oral steroids were only for a few days to help jump start the antibiotics |
Thank you all for your support and commends:) Yesterday evening I took Mercy to a new vet. He was very friendly with- it is important to me- he looked at her ears both and gave us ear drop -surolan- then he explained to me three range of possibilities related to Mercy's skin. He took blood sample to rule out mange as her symptoms are close to mange. Meanwhile he gave us a shampoo -slides wash. He also gave Mercy a shot to calm the itching down to give her skin a rest. By the end of this Friday we'll know if it's mange or not. |
I forgot to mention he sent 40 minutes with us and answered every single question I had. |
Mercy's itching started after she came back from dog boarding. We went on holiday and had to leave Mercy with a dog walker who does dog boarding. Mercy stayed at her flat with her dog. I fo trust the dog walker she 's coming to see Mercy tonight after I told her that Mercy's sick. |

I had to use an ecollar on my Tink when I first got her , her ears were so bad... bleeding, scabs all over, even the entire outer ear flaps were thickened from all the damage she did. She was miserable! After 2 trips to the vet, he said to use Revolution on her, and that did work, so it must have been some kind of mite or something. Her ears took almost 3 months to get back to normal, but I kept the ecollar on her till all the scabs were gone bc they itch too! |
