Conjuctivitis after going to the groomer So, we took Kozmo to get a trim Friday. We always use the same chain, but this time we tred the same chain in a different city. When we picked him up he was sneezing like crazy and started pawing at his face and rubbing around on my chest. I thought it was because of all the loose hair still on him. When we got to the car his right eye was closed and he couldn't open it. We thought he had gotten a hair in it, so when we got home I tried to examine it and flush it. Nothing. We then noticed his skin was like a hot pink color and irritated. Both of his eyes started squinting and watering. He was still trying to paw at his face. We gave him a bath and called our vet who said he was probably having a reaction to the cologne they sprayed on him. We had to give him Benadryl and put Neosporin in it which was a temporary fix until the next morning. When we took him in our vet said he has conjuctivitis and is now on an eye drop and antibiotic. The groomer said they had sprayed an organic cherry cologne on him when we called. We strongly believe they got it in his eyes cause the top of his head was clearly pink. Has this happened to anyone else after a grooming visit? I guess I could just be an overprotective mommy, but I'm not happy in the least that they got cologne spray in my little man's eye and now he's miserable. He was perfectly fine before he went to the groomer. This has never happened at the other Pet Smart we use and we've been there tons of times. |
Just because something is "organic" doesn't make it safe. Poop is organic, but you don't want to put it in your eye do you? (Sorry, I'm mad at your groomer!) Cologne should never be sprayed on the face, I would be furious, and I'm so glad you were observant, and took your baby to the vet. I'd be sending the groomer the vet bill, and finding another groomer. You are not OVER protective you are protective, and should be! |
They are paying for the vet bill and refunded his grooming. My husband told them "This isn't about the money. My little boy is laying over here and can hardly open his eyes" They also got a few other choice words. When we went back over there today they were trying to question how many dogs we have and what vet we took him to. My husband then replied it was none of their business who we took him to, but showed him the important parts of the bill and that we only have one dog. He was not very nice.lol I had assumed before we went that all of the Pet Smart chains used the same thing. After all we had never had any problems before. That's what makes me think even more that they sprayed it in his face. We will definitely not be back. Koz does have his eyes open now, but the right one is still cloudy and he squints some still. We definitely let them know that what they did was negligant and just downright stupid! You don't spray cologne like that in any dog's face, much less a yorkie who has such sensitive skin. It's funny that when we gave him another bath that night his skin turned back to it's original color. I'm not trying to bash Pet Smart by any means. We still love the normal one we go to. I was just wandering if anyone else has had this problem after getting their dogs groomed with the cologne. |
Your poor baby! I'm glad he has a good mommy who brought him to the vet. Hope he feels better soon. Just a word of caution for anyone who may read this thread: do not use regular Neosporin in your pup's eye. There is a special Neosporin Ophthalmic Ointment. Always consult your vet first. |
Definitely! We would have been scared to death to that or the Benadryl without the vet telling us to. Esp. with him only weighing 3 & 1/2 lbs. The only thing we done without the vets instructuon was flush it. |

Give your little guy a hug from me and Max. |
I will not ever use Petsmart grooming. I have heard many negative stories about them. I also don't use Banfield. The only thing I do at Petsmart is buy food and toys. If you google Petsmart grooming complaints you will see tons of complaints. |
I don't understand how cologne got anywhere near his eyes. I would be more inclined to believe someone got shampoo in his eyes. I only use a groomer that will allow me to sit there while they groom my pups. I will not leave my pups with groomers. Guess I am a tad bit over productive, but the stories I have heard frighten me. |
What an idiot to spray anything like that on your dog. And then to come back and start questioning you as to what other dogs you have. Kudos to you husband. I like what he told them. When I spray cologne on my furbabies I alway spray from the back and hold my hand around their head tp keep the spray from going into eyes. Hope your Kozmo is better. |

I have heard alot of complaints also on both. I only use for the toys and food too. |
We didn't have them give him a bath. So no shampoo should have been used. However you could definitely smell the scent on him. And the fact that his skin was pink concerned me. Thanks a bunch for all your well wishes! They're greatly appreciated. He seems to feel better as far as being playful. His eyes still bother him a bit though. He seems to like the amoxicillin..lol |

hahha...my daughter in law loves that stuff, too! Glad he is better! |
Good thing you took your pup to your vet and not Petsmart's vet clinic. I would be looking for another groomer who would let me be observing until they gained my confidence and respected by wishes for the well being of my dog(s). Good to read that he is doing better. "skin was pink":mad: |
