Cough Syrup?? For Trachea Cough Last night I took both Reggie and Max to the vets, Reggie just needed a check up and his shots but Max has been having a dry cough. Well Reggie is now 17 pounds!!!!:eek: the shelter said they guessed him to be about 2 years old... they guessed wrong because he has grown and the 17 pounds is not fat. He is in great shape. Max cough is another story. She 1st asked me if I use a collar. No I never use a collar to walk him always a harness. That is when she said because of him being a yorkie its his trachea. Question is has anyone ever heard of using cough syrup? She said if he starts to cough anymore then he has been doing to give him cough syrup. |
If she's thinking CT (Collapsed Trachea) yes, I have heard of some using cough syrup. Did she suggest which to use? |

Yes I use plain children's cough syrup per my vet. I found the best way to get it into them is to put some on my finger and then rub it on their gums or tounge. Then they have to lick it. And it really does help. I give a little in the morning after breakfast and then again after supper. I think the most I've had to do this was for 2 or 3 days. |

Other meds I've seen prescribed are: Tussigon, Hycodan 02 Hydrocodone Bitartrate (Hycodan, Tussigon, Mycodone) - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company!, and Lomotil 02 Diphenoxylate Hydrochloride (Lomotil, Lonox, Lomanate) - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! (although cough suppression is not mentioned in the above link ... it can be found in Kirk's Veterinary Therapy Book) Robitussin is a brand, there's probably generic out there, just compare the ingredients, esp. the sweetners and amount of active ingredients, amount of alcohol, better yet, ask the vet if it's okay to substitute other similar brands. I've checked other threads and the web (as of 3/31/2011) at http://www.robitussin.com/OurProducts.aspx Robitussin: Active Ingredient: Dextromethorphan HBr, USP 15mg (cough suppressant) Inactive ingredients: alcohol, anhydrous citric acid, artificial & natural flavors, FD&C red no. 40, glycerin, high fructose corn syrup, liquid glucose, menthol, purified water, saccharin sodium, sodium benzoate Robitussin DM: Active Ingredients: Dextromethorphan HBr, USP 10mg (cough suppressant) Guaifenesin, USP 100 mg (Expectorant) Inactive ingredients: anhydrous citric acid, FD&C red no. 40, glycerin, high fructose corn syrup, menthol, natural flavor, propylene glycol, purified water, sodium benzoate, sodium citrate, sucralose and Robitussin for Children: Active Ingredient: Dextromethorphan HBr, USP 7.5mg (cough suppressant) Inactive ingredients: anhydrous citric acid, artificial flavor, FD&C red no. 40, glycerin, high fructose corn syrup, propylene glycol, purified water, saccharin sodium, sodium benzoate, sodium chloride, sodium citrate) |
