Does liver shunt always have symptons Our 2 pound 3 year old female yorkie has had a severe seizure it was bad. Since that time she spent 2 days in hospital tested all blood work was within normal ranges. Our vet says he cant get a normal reading untill she is seizure free for 10 days. So we will schedule in two weeks, for a bile acid test. We do not belive it is liver shunt because she has none of the symptoms that we have seen our vet said today that it may be she is a true epileptic. If anyone has had anything like this happen, please help |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Many pups and dogs with Liver Shunt don't show any signs, some may show one or two symptoms, some many.. and it can come on at any age. I'm sure that helped alot... |
Thank you still praying she doent have it. This has been the saddest last few days of our lives. |
Allergies can also cause seizures...along with lots of chemical house hold cleaners. Good luck...I hope your baby is o.k. |
All I can offer are warm thoughts and wishes that your sweet baby is healthy and home soon. I am so sorry she is sick:( |
Has she ever had any abdominal xrays done? Dogs with LS usually have a smaller than normal sized liver. As Xrays aren't too expensive, maybe see if your vet could do one while waiting for the BAT. With a 2 pound dog, it would end up being a full body xray anyway and the vet could also rule out anything else that would be really obvious on the xray.... Many times dogs with LS can have frequent Urinary Tract Infections... and may tend to have other symptoms within 30 minutes of eating a meal. They can show slow growth rates from a puppy, have a poor coat, and tend to be skinny and hard to put weight on bc many can be picky eaters. Some tend to be very hyperactive, others can be quiet to the point of being lethargic. |
Your other thread stated that she continued to have seizures even with the meds so this makes me think more towards LS... Lactulose can stop seizures in LS dogs. I copied these posts from your first thread... Quote:

She had another small seizure this morning, at least we think that is what it was. She was wobbly and couldnt walk right after her meds. Maybe it was just she was a little drunk from the meds. Cant seem to get the vet to help at all. Is it normal to wait 10 days to test the bile acid? He says she has to be normal before testing or the results wont be accurate. I am ready to switch vets. Not sure what to do. Thank you all for your prayers she is a rescue dog that no one wanted because she is crippled I will try and post her picture later. But thank you all for your prayers, |
