New puppy.. think she has a "roach back" not sure though I've had my baby girl for over a month now.. and for the last couple days her legs have been making a little cracking sound everytime she moves them around. She isn't bothered by it. she runs, eats, plays. But this noise has only happened for the last couple days and I have been freaking out! Then I looked into it and read some articles about yorkies and I just noticed she has somewhat of a roachback. Because when she sits she looks like a cat, it curves it. My other dog, carin terrier, he has a straight back when he sits down. So I was wondering if the roach back would have anything to do with her "crackin and popping" sounds coming from her legs. Or if it is just making that noise due to growth spurts?? can someone please help me and let me know if your yorkie ever made these noises before?? |
I have never noticed any noise coming from any of my 6, ever. I would say a vet visit is the only choice. It could be luxating pattella. That does not explain the back. Where did you get the puppy? Did you ask the breeder? You should of taken the puppy for a check up with in the first week or so. Was it like that then? Good Luck and Welcome |

As far as the Roach Back....can you take a picture of her standing, a side view...and post it. |
:animal36 Good Luck, I hope that she will be ok. We love our little ones so much it is so hard when we think something is wrong. Hope & pray everything will be good.:animal-pa:aimeeyork |
We also have a new baby girl and she appears to have developed this 'roach back'. When sitting and standing both, she looks like a cat's back. Is there any cure for this? Some sort of back brace to help her spine develop straight? Thanks! Mike |
When Piper was about 6 months old I was concerned that she was developing a roach back. Found out a month later that Piper was walking hunched because she was in pain from Legg Perthes. She had surgery and after healing was complete the roach back was gone. Pain can cause them to walk with a hunched back. Maybe the cracking sound you hear is causing pain. |
This is quite weird that you replied to this, as our baby's name is Piper also! Did your Piper show any signs of pain in her hind legs at all? Ours does not and runs and plays like nothing is happening. Thanks Quote:

What has your vet said about your questions regarding your new puppy. Did you take her for a vet appointment within the alloted time for your contract? The cracking and popping from her legs could be Luxating Patella. Is it one leg or both? Who is your breeder/where did you purchase her? The chances of her needing surgery is much greater when they are tiny puppies and have LP issues as compared to LP issues developing at a later age. You should limit jumping and purchase a set of doggy stairs or ramp for getting on and off the beds and furniture. |
I would have her checked out. Noticed you had a cairn also. I have three yorkies and a cairn |
Legg Perthes and Luxating Patella are two different issues although both have to do with the bones in the back legs. Legg Perthes is a condition that involves the hips and the long bone called the femur. Luxating Patella involves the knees. The ligament and/or the grooves in the knee socket do not hold the bone in place causing it to pop out. Either way, you really need to take her be evaluated. I would also be in contact with your breeder. |
