Calvin's 6 month liver shunt surgery update So Calvin had his 6 month BATs follow-up on Monday. I spoke with my vet last night (& this morning b/c I always think of things after I hang up) and he told me that Calvin's BATs are still elevated. He said that it could be one of two things...first is that his major shunt hasnt completely closed (although he thinks that is unlikely) or that he has micro vascular shunts (which he says isnt uncommon). So he wants me to keep him on the L/D and the lactulose and retest him in a year. He says that he will lead a normal life and should do fine with the L/D and lactulose. He has gained over a pound and a half since his surgery and he looks great. His fur is nice and shiny, etc. I guess I was just hoping that after the surgery and the shunt was repaired that he would be just fine. I know technically he is fine, but its just something we will have to monitor. Thanks. Kelly |
All dogs who have a shunt repaired really can't be considered totally normal for their lifetime. The protocol sounds good. Any reason you aren't giving SAMe? MVD is common in dogs with LS. Usually they will take a biopsy at the same time to check. |
What is SAMe? The vet didnt say anything except the L/D and lactulose... I know he wont live a completely "normal" life but I guess I should have said as normal as can be expected given his condition... |
Denamarin or a similar product also contains milk thistle... basically helps to cleanse the liver and helps it to regenerate... ask your vet about products for 'liver support' Glad to hear he's doing okay... :D |
I'm glad that Calvin is doing well. Give him a big hug from us!!! |
