No groomer while herniated disk on the mend Need some help and convincing. Zipp's herniated disk is healing nicely. Got him off the predisone so his bladder and kidneys should be back to normal in a couple of days. He is walking around much better and not in pain, that I would have heard while home. I asked/told our vet and he definitely said no grooming and to let his back/disk heal for at least another week but that is not holding water with DW who wants to get him groomed Mon so she can have pics taken of the pups. Zipp is a "big time' squirmer and I do not want him to re injure his back/disk by twisting around on the groomer's table. Need lots responses tks. From a response to another thread - Spinal Injury The "bed" rest and NSAIDs (predisone sp?) worked well for old Zipp. His has a herniated disk according to the Vet and the xrays. Just be careful with the NSAIDs as some of them (predisone) can affect their bladder/kidneys etc while they are on the meds. Old Zipp is getting his zip back, walking much better. |
I know you are talking about your fur baby here, but i have a herniated disk myself right now, i have had the epidural shots that have helped so much but i still have twinge of pain every now and then. My Dr told me that it could take months to heal completley if it does at all. He said just because i feel better to take it easy and gradually get back into my regular routine. So please take your time with your furbaby and let him heal, could be he feels good just because the meds have covered up the pain for now till he is completley healed, don't rush him into anything. Believe me i know how painful it is. Just a thought, but i wonder if they can do the epidural shot on animals like they do humans? Good luck i hope Zipp's disk heals completley. |
abbey, Thanks for the reply. Zipp just turned 16(?). Question mark b/c I adopted him Feb '10 - See the thread about spike. He's healthy per last vet exam except for the bad disk. I'll brush/comb him and try to trim his whiskers/muzzle and DW will have to be contented with that. |
Yes, I have to agree, the risk of injury during grooming is just not worth it... |
I think rest and recovery are more important to a 16 year old yorkie then pictures. Pictures can wait. Let him heal. Yorkies are notorious squirmers and wigglebutts for grooming. Plus he may not be too happy about it if he is in any discomfort |
I would let it heal. We were told by our regular vet, rehab vet, and neurologist, to not even bathe Layla during flare-ups with her discs, because dogs just can't help but to shake when wet! Put off the grooming until absolutely 100% better... which is usually 6-8 weeks of rest after the disc issue begins. Until it is completely healed, it is very very easy to re-injure the same spot. |
