Not kennel cough, then what can it be? 4 weeks ago me and my wife bought our second yorkie. This time we went thru petland. After bringing her home we noticed clear liquid coming from the nose. Didn't really thinkuch of it. Just thought it was because of a new location. Well two weeks later I had to take her to get check out. Just for warrenty purposes I guess, o and also to check signs of kennel cough. Doctors just asked me if she was coughing. Which at the time was no. Well last wednsday we both got bit by ants outside. I rush her in and put her in the shower rinsing them off. Well later on the following nite we took her to the em rm because she was coughing g alot and clear thick like mucus was coming out of her mouth. Got her check out. Again they don't think it's kennel cough. Told them bout the ants and they said that might be the cause. Gave pills to give to her but still the same. What do I do now? I will explain more but it hard to type this much off a iPhone. Lol Robert |
Place your hand against her larnyx...if she coughs it's kennel cough. They usually cough more at night also. What were the meds you were given? |
Dr gave her a shot of benadryl and some ointment for the ant bites. Along with the pills for the cough Can I do anything else before I take her back to the main doctor? Seems like it gets worse at night. More coughing back to back. |
O no. Seems like when both doctors checked the temp. After doing that said o if she had kennel cough she would be running a temp. Then I read that they don't run a high temp. ???? So now I'm lost. When I get home I will look up the name of the pills |
Are you sure it's a cough or could it be a reverse sneeze? Trachea xray'ed? Heart sounds good? |
They don't run a fever with kennel cough. Usually antibotics are given as a preventative against pneumonia but does not treat the cough. You can use a warm mist vaporizer or take her into a steam filled bathroom....either of those usually help. Kennel cough is contagious and if you have other dogs in the home...they may catch it also. |
now that you mention it. It does sort of sound like a reverse sneeze. Then a hacking cough following. Sort of like she wants to spit up something. X-Ray. No heart beat I assume is fine. Dr's never said anything after it was checked. |
So my question is if a dog has kennel cough. How do they check it? First doctor ran a temp. Then asked if she was coughing. That seemed like it was enough for him to rule out that she had kennel cough. And this was after two weeks that I had her. Then the following week a dr at the er took her temp and then ruled out kennel cough. After I told her about ants. Said that o might be cause of the ants. MIGHT BE!!! Ahh great. |

Checking in for an update on your puppy.... |
My pomeranian just had allergic rhinitis tht looked suspiciously like kennel cough. He is just now passed the coughing fits and only occasionally will he do a small hack. Sarge (my pom) ran a temp, 104.3, had an ear infection that was draining into his throat, so they gave him an antibiotic for that. They gave him a shot of benadryl and put him on a liquid antibiotic to take care of the cough. It took us a good 3 weeks to get him over the coughing. His eyes were weepy from his eyes running so much. We were told to feed him wet food until his cough subsided as the dry food, and any dust from the food, would exacerbate his cough. We took his collar off to allow him some wiggle room around the throat area. It sounded like kennel cough, he hacked and acted like he wanted to bring up mucus like kennel cough, but the doc swore it wasn't kennel cough with a thorough exam. Since he is low to the ground, and can get into any number of things, and this is the season for stuff to start growing and coming out, he had something affect him. I hope your little one is ok...please keep us posted. |
So this morning I dropped off both dogs. Seems like my older male yorkie started up hacking up also. If Bella does have kennel cough chances of him having it are high. Since they were at times drinking out of the same bowl. Also he was never like that. Since the new puppy came that's when changes happened. Well in a couple of hours I will see what the status is. And also let's see if Petland will cover the cost of the medical bill for my other yorkie Barkley. Since the dog I brought from them did infect my own. Also yesterday we say that now there is yellow coming out when Bella coughs. And let me just say that it is really sad when you take your dog to the em room and they don't listen to you. I'm out 135 dollars because she wanted to say it was from ant bites. Wasted money. She didn't even listen to us when we told her about the coughing. Ahh what can you do right. |
I'm so sorry you got this dog from a Pet store. These dogs come from puppy mills and are never healthy. PUPPYMILLS.COM The dogs don't have to drink out of the same water dish to catch kennel cough. It's an airborn virus. Other pets can catch it simply being in the same area even if they are kept seperate. Kennel Cough - Dog Kennel Cough Information - Kennel Cough In Dogs Treatments |
