It is such a sad, sad story. That baby is dead and now her owner doesn't even know why. Poor, poor little dog. I know in my heart there is that beautiful place where she is right now, well and happy and playing. If I didn't believe that, I could read no more posts. I honestly do not know how poor vets and their staff take it when they see so much of this as I can barely stand it.

Someone mention she might have gotten a pill. I know Kayla is so fast and we have to really watch taking our pills. She got one of my husband's metformin (diabetes) pills and thank goodness it must have tasted so bad she spit it out. I almost died. You can't be too careful around these little outfits. We were sitting right there too and it may be with this lady being 80 she might have dropped a pill and didn't realize it. What a shame....poor little baby.

Oh, it is just so heartbreaking all around. Yes, I fear Tibbe will somehow get a pill I might drop, too. I scour the floor constantly to be sure I haven't accidentally dropped one. Oh, I hope that poor baby went fast. I hope her owner is okay and someone is looking out for her as she has got to be suffering awfully. They are in my prayers.

I'm afraid that the symptoms sound like many different causes, from low sugar to poisoning to liver shunt to head injury etc. I'm so sorry to hear she wasn't able to make it to the Vet. Prayers for the owner, she has to be beside herself.

Anther thing that could have happened, if the oler lady had a recliner , maybe the yorkie got hurt if the dog crawled in between the recliner... Could of hurt the dog accidently , and then the dog had enternal injuries.. maybe poisioned , ate a wild mushroom outside or something.

OK, shoot me for saying this; but who the heck gave a 10 month old puppy to an 80 year old woman? UGH

Ok, shoot me for saying this but my Grandmother at the age of 80 was the most alert and fit person(one of her age) that I ever knew. She cooked and cleaned daily for two other people that were somewhat younger than her.

If she would have wanted a puppy to love at her age I would have never denied her wishes. Of course I would have been there for her...in case. Love knows age limit and she probably loved this little one very much.

I don't think that the issue is whether or not an 80 year old should have a dog .... it was should an 80 year old be given a puppy. Odds are, if someone that age gets a puppy, the dog will outlive them and then what happens to the dog? Other things besides death can happen as well -- a small stroke, a broken hip, dementia sets in, etc. Even if there are prior arrangements made as to who will take the dog if the elderly person passes, it can be really difficult for the dog.

The SPCA has a program that addresses this issue -- "seniors for seniors." If a senior citizen will take a dog that is at least 7 years old, the adoption fee is reduced to $15. The older dogs are calmer and more settled, and the senior gets the positive health benefits from having a pet, it's a win-win.

:thumbup: I guess you're right. I really didn't think of how the dog would feel if something were to happen. I think the "senior for seniors" is an excellent idea. Thank you for sharing.

The 80 year old is active.She is not walking around with problems.She got the poor dog from her granddaughter who moved to a apt.So really what a nice grandma to take the responsiblity when her granddaughter didn't.I feel so bad for the dog,and the lady feels like it is her fault.She is just sick about it.She did tell me she only takes pills in the kitchen,and her pets are blocked off from that room by a kid gate.Her other dog that is around 14 years is sad.I have heard him bark.He never did when her yorkie was there. =(

:thumbup: I totally agree with this. The older dogs are the least likely to be adopted and in my opinion make the BEST pets ever as they have seen the world as far as training goes & they are the most grateful to be rescued. They are so Loving & kind and make wonderful pets for anyone not just seniors. I have taken many seniors out of shelters and not regretted a one of them. All they want to do is please you and they are so soulful they climb straight into your heart.

Typically not a good idea, but if the 80 year old has a good support system and is in great health, mobile, it can work. My grandmother was very active at 80 when she brought home her last tiny poodle. However, she had my aunt very close by to help and take the dog if necessary. Grandma outlived the poodle, who lived a long, healthy life. :p

I am so sorry the lady lost her dog. If the dogs eyes were crusted over it sounds like the dog might have been sick for awhile. Without doing an autopsy there is no way to ever know what happened.

I totally get what you are saying. My parents are getting up there in age and are thinking about getting a kitten. Their 14 year old cat just died of cancer and they have another cat that is several years old that is now confused and lonely. I'm wondering who's going to take the cat in 10-15 years when mom and dad are too old or God forbid not here anymore?
