Need Help Anemia and Seizures after Ivermectin Hi; I have a 5 pound yorkie named Lilly who is 1 years old. The vet gave her two injections of ivermectin after she caught mites from the groomer. The shots were given two weeks apart - the last one was given two weeks ago. On Sunday she started falling to the side and acting disoriented so I took her back to the vet yesterday. He ran a bunch of blood work and said she is severely anemic, white blood, red blood and platelet count are all low. This dog had no issues before the shots, the vet is saying it's not from the ivermectin but I believe it triggered an auto-immune response in her. Reading on the web it looks like maybe Hemolytic Anemia? My question is - anyone going through something similar? He put her on prednisolone 5 mg once a day and baytril but I haven't given her the baytril yet until the full results come back that there is an infection present. She is eating and drinking but her gums are pale and she's still having the seizures once or twice a day. Any help would be appreciated!!!! |
Did your vet check Bile Acids ? |
I am not sure, I can check...What would the bile acids show? |
Was it demodex mites or saracoptic? Because with demodex mites the dogs immune system is compromised and that could cause other problems |
It was Cheyletiellosis in Dogs (Walking Dandruff Mite). From my understanding its like Lice. The vet should have given me a dip for her instead of these shots which seem to have side effects. |

Have you looked up side-effects for the ivermectin on the net just to be sure? Poor little thing, this sounds so awful. I am sure you are scared to death for her but these little babies can be so resilient and make dramatic responses to good treatment so I am praying that your vet will nail down the diagnosis, get her on treatment and you will soon see her up and about again. I wish you two all the best as you go through this terrible time and please know we are thinking of you and keep us posted, please. |
We have member here who started this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...vermectin.html There is a wealth of info on the net about the side effects of this drug. I hope all is well with your little one. Please keep us posted. She is in my thoughts and prayers. |
I have never heard of injections of Ivermectin for mites. Personally, I would seek a second opinion. If you are correct about the hemolytic anemia, she needs to be seen by a specialist in my opinion. |

Very sorry to the OP. Side effects at this level are uncommon. I would not be surprised if the ivermectin did cause the problem or trigger an underlying problem though. I would think more supportive care is indicated, so I'd get a second opinion. |

Thank you all for your support. We are going to see a specialist on Monday. The vet did a full CBC, additional blood work and had a pathologist review and all they could come back with was that her bone marrow was compromised. He even said her blood sugar was normal. She is on prednisolone, 5 mg a day. I have split the tablets in half and give her a dose every 12 hours after reading this might be better than just giving her the whole 5 in the morning. She is eating and alert but I can tell she gets tired after running around a bit and then she falls over - either with a faint or seizure I also read is a symptom of AIHA. I really think the ivermectin caused her to have this reaction, she was a healthy, crazy active dog a month ago. I really hope she can pull through this. |
This is just tragic and I feel so sorry for poor Lilly and Chrissy78. This site opens my eyes daily about things I never knew were out there when I read posts like this and am grateful for them sharing the information so their baby can get more help and also so other dogs can hopefully avoid this tragedy. After not having a dog for so long and not finding this site until 1 1/2 years after I got Tibbe, I have a world of catching up to do. |
I just had a very real scare with my little girl and my sil"s little boy. The vet gave them a dose of ivermaectrin wormer and Tink almost died. She would eat and drink. But, could not stand very well, would fall on her side, have the seizure like tremurs adn so did Peanut. It sounds like the ivermectrinis the culprit to me. But, I am no Dr. I will not allow any vet to give anything we own Ivermectrin anymore. That is some scary stuff. I filed a complaint against the vet that gave my baby that wormer. It was ridiculous and it is like they "can't" admit that what they did MIGHT not be in the best interest for our babies. I am praying for you both, this must be very stressful for you, I know it was for me. By the way, Peanut now lives with US!!! |
