Need LP Surgery Advice ASAP!! It's been ages since I have been on but I need your help. Sadie has LP in both of her back knees. In Dec she got very sick and after 4 vet visits and an overnight stay for meds and fluids (and $700) we finally knocked out the intestinal infection. Late last week we noticed the beginning signs again. She scoots and then holds her leg up and limps around, she also would not potty. back to the doc we go and we have found out that the LP she has has gotten worse and she won't go potty b/c it hurts thus causing the infection. Our vet recommend surgery. My husband took Sadie to an ortho specialist this morning and he wants to do surgery today on both knees. He also thinks she has torn her ACL in one knee thus the extreme behaviors we have been seeing lately. I have not researched LP surgery recovery and the vet is saying she will need to be confined for 6 weeks!!! I'm terrified!!! Also she sleeps with us and our other 2 yorkies and I don't know how i'm going to keep her safe for healing but seperate them from her especially at night! Please give any advice, do's and don'ts that you may have!!! Thank you, jenny |
I will ask the moderator to move this to sick and injured forum so you will get some input. I'm sorry about your dog! |
Sorry to hear about your baby. I can't help you with the LP, but x pens are great for surgery recovery patients. Although, my Mylee would not tolerate being confined at all and I was worried that the stress from confinement would hurt her more after her hip surgery. She would pace, climb, dig etc., so we took the folding portions from the x-pen and blocked off our furniture, and our bed, and blocked the stairs with a baby gate. Basically anything she would have tried to jump up on or was off limits we blocked off. My house is not that big, so this didn't leave much room for too much exercise, and she slept on her bed on the floor. She was just more content and calm with us or with Moka (our other dog), then we took her out on a leash so she couldn't run. 6 weeks is not that long actually, we were in it for 16 weeks. Take a deep breath, process your situation and you will come up with a creative way to make everyone happy. Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery. |

My Zada had both knees operated on at the same time, and yes, it will take 6 to 8 weeks of confinement in order for her to heal properly. I put Zada in her expen attached to the front of her crate, a pee pad down along with water and chewys. She stayed in that for the first two weeks, then after that I took her in the yard (harness and leash on) to let her potty, and walk a little bit twice a day for a week, then three times a day, then four times a day for about 4 more weeks. She got stronger each week. Since you slept with your baby, I'd suggest putting a chair by your bed and put her in a crate and on the chair. She may whine, but you just can't let her be in the bed with you at all. You must stay strong during her healing. You would't want her to damage her knees and risk another surgery. |

Torn CCL is very painful for a pup. LP is not. These pups bounce back quickly after surgery. :) Good luck. |

Checking to see if Sadie had surgery today and, if so, how she is doing. |
3 Attachment(s) Sorry to hear about Sadie. Hopefully she had surgery and is on her way to feeling better. My Pixie had it last summer on one leg and at first I thought how are we going to get through 6 weeks of confinement as Pixie hated to be crated. I got a small animal ex pen and moved it with me around the house so she could be with us. Also I put her in a crate on my bed at night. I also bought a pen and set it up next to my bed. |
I hope your .little one is feeling better. Did you go.thru with the.surgery? My boy had lp surgery a couple years ago. we kept him still and quiet for 6 weeks. You will have to restrict her movement for at least that long depending on your surgeons prescription. our surgeon told us no activity for 6 weeks except to go out to potty. we carried him out and then put him down. it was a very long 6 weeks but I did see a light at the end of the tunnel as knew he would feel better. Please let us know how she is doing. Best of luck to you and your little one. |
Thank you! Thank you all so much for you kind words and encouragement. We did go ahead with the surgery and yesterday evening got an update that both knees with LP were repaired and there was not any torn ligaments! We called first thing this AM for our update and she has gone to the bathroom and has no fever and we can pick her up at lunch today! They said everything went well. The little pups and I may move into the guest room so Sadie and Dad can have the bedroom to themselves. The plan at night is to put a bench by the bed to put the crate on so she feels like she is sleeping next to Dad but is still safe. My husband got laid off from his job a couple of weeks ago so he will be able to be home with her for most of the healing. I will send another update after we pick up our girl!! |
So happy surgery went well! It sounds like you have a good plan. I wish for a speedy recovery. |
So happy to hear that her surgery went well. Gilmore had the surgery Thanksgiving and was on crate rest for 12 weeks. It does feel like forever at the beginning but it goes by faster than you think. He is finally free now and is doing very well. I also put his crate on a bin so he felt like he was more involved and closer to us. I found that for me the pen did not work because he would constantly stand up on his hind legs which was defeating the whole purpose of resting him. You will find that you will get into a routine and you just have to remember that you are doing what is in their best interest and not being mean. I feel like it was just yesterday and I was posting just like you that Gilmore was having surgery and I was a wreck. Here we are months later and he is back to being the crazy active loving puppy he was before. Only now he can run with no pain. |
