Thank goodness for the good news. |
Although not the best news it still seems like a fairly positive result. I hope the medication will knock out the Lepto. See all along you have been a great mother and advocate for Barney. You have had your Yorkie mom intuition going all along. Sometimes when we do what we think is best at the time it turns out differently. You are a caring and involved mom who is trying to do the best for her dogs each and every day. I want to thank you on behalf of Buster Brown and all the other dogs and owners who are now more aware thanks to your postings on Barney and his Lepto experience. Sending our best to you, Barney, and the rest of the furkids. |

That is great news. Thank goodness that you are a caring owner and pursued healthcare for Barney. Those two weeks of antibiotics will go by quickly and I am sure he will be good as new! |
Great News Cathy! |
Cathy, I am just seeing this...:( I am so sorry you have had to go through this. Sounds like you got good news and I am happy to hear that Barney will recover and be okay. I will say a prayer for his full recovery right now. ((hugs)) *:)* |
Cathy...I am so happy that the news was not as bad as you originally feared. Sounds like a good dose of the antibiotic will take care of it...thank heavens! Give Barney a special hug from Trixie. |
I'm glad that Barney is going to be Ok. I think I am going to have re-think the Lepto Vac for my two now. |
thank GOD he's going to be alright. i was very worried. and now off to make appt. at the vets for two pups to get their lepto shots...darn squirrels in our yard all the time...too scared to not get them done now. thanks sooo much for all the help with deciding about this vaccine Cathy and God bless you and the family as Barney gets better. |
I am so glad they were able to narrow it down to what strain. Good job momma for staying on top of everything. I know Barney will be bouncing back soon. Your babies are so lucky to have someone like you to love and care for them.;) |
Thank goodness everything is alright. I think you had all of us here holding our breath...please keep us updated on his progress-- which I'm sure will go extremely well. :heart79: |

I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers for an easy successful treatment. Hugs to you both, Bonny |
Thank goodness for that most encouraging information. I lost a dog to Lepto in the '70's and am so encouraged that Barney has a great chance of total recovery. What great news! Thank God for vets and meds! Please give that little sweetie big hugs from Tibbe and me and praise him for being tough enough to make it through this awful disease. And you take care of yourself as we all have some idea of what you have been through and will continue through until he is 100%. |
Glad to hear the good news. |
Cathy, Thank goodness you had the hindsight and intuition to persist to find the answer's to Barney's problems. I am very relieved and happy to hear that he will fully recover. Sending hugs to you and Barney. |
So glad to hear the news, do you believe this warrants getting the vaccine in your area? I'm so impressed with your ability to care for your dogs and find out what's going on with them. |
I have spoken with my vet just recently about this and he said that Leptospirosis is on the rise and has always been a problem, especially in wet areas. When giving the lepto vaccine it should be fine as long as you do not give it with any other vaccinations. |

I am so happy that Barney is going to be ok.. |
Barney progress so far... Barney started his doxycyline last night. I was nervous about side effects but he seems to be doing just fine. He seemed a little tired last night after the medication. My vet called me after receiving the info from the specialist, but I missed the call so I emailed her. Meanwhile, the lepto strain Barney is infected with is one carried by skunks!!! |

Now I'm more confused than ever...ugghhh.... Well Barney is on his meds and doing fine. But............ I emailed my vet to update her on all this, and she wrote back saying she was (1) not a fan of the vaccine for lepto and (2) that she does see more reactions with it and (3) she only gives it when absolutely necessary. I am not sure if Barney's test was positive because of prior vaccination. He was vaccinated for lepto around 5 or 6 years ago, but had it annually before that. The weird thing is that the 5 strains were negative and the 1 strain positive, and also the liver and kidney elevations and findings on the ultrasound. So, all that (elevations and ultrasound) could be completely coincental, or they could be exposure/infection. I think treating with the antibiotic was a good idea, just in case, but going forward, what do I do:confused::confused::confused: My vet will confer w/ the specialist and after they battle it out, I'll see what they say. I just don't think my tiny backyard is a mecca for leptospirosis, but we have had those visiting skunks so I don't know. |
I am very happy to hear Barney is doing well. Thank you for sharing this info. I am leaning toward not having the vaccine given to my boys. The thought of Lepto scares me because we have plenty of animals in our area, where we walk, that are potential carriers. However, so many sources I read say the vaccine needs to be given every 6 - 8 months to be effective. I am wrestling with all of the details and plan to discuss the vaccine again with our vet. |

Well, I'm glad at least to hear that Barney:animal36Boy will beat this bugger!:) |
I am glad that Barney is on the mending side of things. I wish there was a more definitive course of action but I guess caution is the best that the vets can do. Hope they can give you some clear cut remedies. |
I'm so glad to hear that Barney will be OK. My vet went from adamently not recommending the lepto vaccine, to recommending it. She said lepto is now pretty prevalent in our area and it is worth the risk to get the vaccine to be protected. Man, you just don't know what to do. |
Glad Barney is going to ok!! ;) |

Cathy, I lost track of this thread, Im so glad that Barney is better. I bet you are so relieved. |
Cathy, I just saw this thread today and read through the entire thing. Wow, you've been through a lot in the last few weeks! I admire how you researched, persisted, asked questions, got to the bottom of things (as best you could with some of the ambiguous answers you got)... and most of all, I'm glad that Barney is now doing okay! |
I'm so happy to hear Barney is still doing well.:) |
