New 9 week baby sick?? new! confused! Hello im a new mini yorkie owner this is the first puppy I have ever had. I got him a few days ago hes 9 weeks young and I purchased him from a breeder I paid 1500 dollars for him. The breeder said he had his first shot and the day after I got him 3 days ago I took him in as he was due for his second round. He was given the norm plus I had the vet give him a de wormer even though I didnt see any worms. Is it weird the breeder hadnt given him a de wormer??!! I have a worm phobia! Also hours after he got the shots he threw up 2 times water but then ate and was fine.. is that normal? One more thing its cold here and hes got a runny nose now should I be worried?? Hes sleeping alot and I couldnt say if its his norm since I have known him less than a week. Hes eating lightly and drinking. I am soooo afraid I am going to see a bunch of worms since they gave him a de wormer!! ahhhhh I just love him and am worried if this is all ok. Now that I have written a book im done sorry. |

I think keep him warm and give him some "puppy Nutrical". Take him back to the vet in the morning. Call and tell them you think something is wrong. Puppies will usually eat that and get something in his tummy. If you have a small syringe from the meds they gave you...you can also use it to get him to drink water. He should be sleeping a whole lot as he's still very young. My two slept a lot until they were 5 months old. Also keep him in a crate or expen when you can't be with him. It will keep him safe and comfortable. |
I agree with the advice you got above. 9 weeks is young and tiny . . and any illness at this stage could be dangerous for him. |
If he's got a runny nose now he needs to see the vet again. At nine weeks, he was too young to be taken from his mother. Even something minor can be life threatening in a puppy this young. |
What is the "norm" as far as vaccines go? Vomitting following vaccinations is NOT normal. If he got a DHAPP (or one with an L = Lepto) in it, he most likely had a reaction to the shot. If he received bordatella and now has a runny nose, he could have contracted it from the nasal vaccine. Please take him back to the vet to be thoroughly checked. There are so many things that can go wrong very quickly with one so young. And, in the future, only one vaccine at a time for toy breeds (with at least 2 weeks in-between any other vaccines). Corona is not a core vaccine and is not needed at all. Lepto should only be given if very prevalent in your area as it does not cover all strains out there and there is a very high risk of adverse reactions in toy breeds........ |
He has likely had a reaction to the vaccination and as you did not specify which ones he was given, some do cause bad reactions and I do not recommend them ie lepto and corona virus. Also 9 weeks is too young to leave the breeder and way to young for a second vacc's. I don't start vacc's until 10 weeks of age, second one is given 3 -4 weeks later. My pups dont leave until 3 1/2 months of age or often much older. Hope he will be ok. |
Thanks Everyone I will be making him an appt to return to the vet on monday I hope that will be soon enough. I live in a really small town and its so very hard to get a vet appt. I will take him in and check him out! I better be safe than sorry... |
In the event he starts acting lethargic make sure you give him a tiny bit of honey/pancake syrup or karo and water...feeding him good protien will also keep his spirits up.. good luck ! |
You are getting a lot of good advice here. I also agree that he left his mom too soon, and now you have to be his mom. As others have said, keep him warm and safe and get to the vet for anything that you don't understand. Ask the vet if maybe he/she can put together a kit for you to help take care of the little guy. Ruger is the first dog I've ever had, and we got him from a breeder. Soon you'll have less and less questions as a new dog owner. Meanwhile, it sounds like you are doing everything right. |
