Buddy neutering questions
 

Greetings. We took Buddy to the Vet that the rescue place uses to have his shots and have him neutered. We dropped him off at 8am yesterday (Monday 2/14). We got a call around 10am that the surgery was successful and he was in recovery. We picked him up at 4:30 yesterday and of course he was pretty much in and out of it.

When he got home, we gave him some water and he drank and drank until we had to stop him. Then he just slept for several hours. Around 7 or so I hand fed him a few kibbles which he ate, but not very much.

Later last night, he wasn't moving and his surgery area was (and is) very red and swollen. So I went to pick him up around his upper waist. He started crying (it broke my heart), so I put him down. At bedtime, he let Natalie pick him up to sleep with us. I think he slept fine. I noticed he moved a couple of times to different places on the bed during the night.

This morning, same thing some light crys when we picked him up. I think he's more alert and he didn't want to go outside nor eat or drink. We made a blanket into a gurney and carried him upstairs which is where we work. He's now moved himself from the blanket and is sitting at the top of the stairs landing where he likes to be during the day.

I'm just curious to any of you out there who have had their child neutered, if all this is normal. It just crushes us to see him suffer like this. Does he need a pain pill? Antibiotic? Anything? Please let me know your experiences and whether we need to do anything special for our boy. I appreciate any help!

If he still seems to have pain you might want to get some pain meds from your vet.

My vet gave me pain meds that were in 4 little baby dropper syringes and I had to give them to Rizzo every morning for the 4 days following the surgery. I recommend calling your vet to see if maybe the tech forgot to give you the meds?

Aww poor baby! Oliver is scheduled to be neutered this Friday and I'm soooo nervous!! I feel so unprepared since he's my first pup :( I hope Buddy recovers soon!!

I think it's just like with people, some tolerate the pain better than others. When I had Gulliver done they sent us home with pain meds that we never used. He was up and going 90 miles/hour when I picked him up that afternoon and I had a heck of a time getting him to take it easy for the next few days so he wouldn't bust a stitch.

I agree, he needs pain meds. Max needed them the first day. If his belly is still red and swollen, I would have the vet take a quick look at that too. Best wishes to Buddy.

Thanks everyone. This vet recommended if needed part of a baby aspirin. Interestingly enough, there have been some remarkable changes since my 1st post on this. Buddy was upstairs where we left him and Natalie went downstairs into the kitchen. She looked behind her and there was Buddy. Since then he has let Natalie bring him back up without a whimper and she was able to take him outside on his leash for a short walk in the yard. He's now sleeping next to me in my office.

I'm guessing since he's not crying when he's picked up right now, perhaps he's feeling better. I hope so!

I'd ask for something other than baby aspirin. My boys were quiet after their neuters but no pain. I'd call the vet and discuss this.

Latest update. It's now about 5:20pm. Buddy is almost back to his old self. Much more hyper, gets up and down the stairs (albeit slower), but we have to be careful coz he still lets out a short cry if we touch him wrong. I think part of this is a protective instinct as we haven't gone near that area. In any event, he's eating, been on a walk, done his business and hopefully is on the road to recovery.
