Need ideas-Gilmore scooting all over I'm hoping maybe someone has a idea of what might be wrong with Gilmore. It started this week when he didn't do his regular poop first thing in the morning. He goes all the time- in rain, in sleet, in a blizzard, after his surgery-nothing has hindered his pooping ability. He is pretty much a 3-4 times a day pooper. He went all day without going which is so not like him and then started scooting. I brought him to the vet and she expressed his anal glands and said there was a little blood. She put him on antiobiotic and I thought he would be good to go. She also shaved his bottom on the chance that his long hair was getting in the way since he hasn't been groomed since his knee surgery. He is still not pooping on his normal schedule. He is only going once a day. I have given him pumpkin and some apple and carrots for fiber. He is scooting all over-constantly. He keeps trying to lick at something back there. He is obviously bothered by something. I will bring in a stool sample tomorrow to the vets but I really don't think it could be worms. He has not had any freedom outside for 3 months. He is taken out to potty on a leash and immediately brought back inside. He is eating, drinking and playing. The only thing that has changed is he is now allowed some freedom in the house as it has been 11 weeks since his surgery. I have looked to see if maybe he pooped somewhere else in the house but he hasn't. He keeps turning around to his back end and going to lick over there but it looks to me like his is licking by his pee pee and not his butt. He is very bothered by something over there. Would you call the vet or just bring him back in tomorrow? I'm so frustrated. Just want Gilmore to feel good. |
I would get him checked out asap he may have some type of infection |
I agree, have your vet check your baby again. Also, I would hold the apple and carrot and just go with the pumpkin (plain, no additives, not pie filling). I hope Gilmore feels better soon. |
I've had luck adding string beans to the food, usually works overnight... if he was shaved close he may have irritation from that... also his anal glands may have filled again and should be checked... sometimes they will refill repidly... is he urinating okay? If he's not pooping, I think he would start to look somewhat bloated in the tummy, could be from ingesting something (like a chunk of a chew) or from lack of exercise (from surgery lay-up).... maybe try swimming him or better yet ask your vet about swimming him as all else needs to be addressed... |
It could be an anal gland issue - or perhaps worms. I would take him in tomorrow and have the 'ole bum checked out. Anal glands can get impacted causing infection -- if not treated they can rupture. |
Poor Gilmore. I hope he's doing better. I would have the vet check him out. Was he recently groomed? Sometimes if they are shaved too close they get itchy and scoot. |
Thanks guys!!! I took Gilmore back to the vet today and she gave him a second antibiotic. She expressed his anal glands again but said there was not much there since they had done it on Thursday. We are testing for worms but I don't think that will be it since he has not been outside unsupervised for the last 3 months. She doesn't think he was shaved too close to cause itching but who knows. She thinks he is already uncomfortable by his bottom area and all the scooting is making his bottom hurt even more. Hopefully it will help!!! |
I just love his name so much. If you think his bottom is sore, you can try putting some diaper cream or hydrocortisone cream on the area and see if it helps a little. Have you checked out the skin on his back...right in front of his tail? Anything odd there? |
Thanks Wylies mom! Are you a Gilmore Girls fan? That is where we got his name from. My daughter and I watched all seven seasons of the Gilmore Girls over a one week period. His tail area looks fine. I have looked over every inch of him more than once. I will definitely try diaper cream or hydrocortisone cream. Thanks!!! |
