Bella has ringworm My 11 wk old has ringworm. The Dr. put her on amoxicillian!!!!!!!????? I've never heard of this.... Also betadine baths and oxistat cream. Input would be greatly appreciated. I would like to hear from some of you before I start the procedure. Betadine i will do. Thanks |
Amoxicllin for ringworm? Um, HUH? This is like trying to empty a swimming pool with a teaspoon. Amoxi is an anti-bacterial. Ringworm is not a bacteria, it's a fungus. For what purpose does the vet want to give Amoxi? Given the age, I'm not sure about oral anti-fungals, but that is the preferred method to treat ringworm. They'd use something like Diflucan x 6-8 weeks (pill, by mouth) and then re-test (grow a culture) after that to see if ringworm is still present. |
We had beagle pups with ringworm. Was given an ointment and a daily bath soap. Had to soap up the pup, let it set for about 5 or so minutes then rinse. Word of warning....YOU CAN catch it too! I got it inbetween my ring & index finger and then on my forarm on one side. On the other arm I had two places on my forarm. They were BAD! It took about 8 months for it to finally go away on me and I have scars left from it! I ended up having to take a strong fungal med. and had ointment to put on too. It was terrible. The vet we took the pups to said, "NO you can't catch it from them. Don't worry." Went to another vet later (the one we use now) He just shook his head and said YES you can get it from them. |
Bella Vet said amoxicillin for possible secondary infection.......But i still don't want to use it. No diflucan for possible liver damage. She is just to small. 15oz still. So I have decided to use the betadine and a chephexadine shampoo... thanks for ur input. |
Posted this before but for some reason it didn't show? We had beagle pups with ringworm. Had to shampoo everyday for several days in a row. Had to let the shampoo set on the pup for about 5 minutes I think. Just wanted you to know, if you didn't already know it, YOU can catch ringworm form them. Was told by the first vet that I couldn't get it from them. Then the second vet (the one we use now) said, ofcourse you can catch it. Anyway, It was terrible for me. Took 8 months to go away and I still have scars ! Once place between my fingers on one hand and on my forearm on that side. Th other arm had two places on my forearm. |

No, the antibiotic in for possible secondary infection-to prevent one-I guess. She doesn't have anything but the ringworm now. Thankd for all the feedback. It is so helpful when you feel lost at what to do. Her ringworm is horrible. It's in 5 different places. But she is not scratching it, thank goodness. She is so little to have anything is you ask me...I feel bad for her. |
I really want to say, I'm sorry. Tia had it when we adopted her at 10 weeks. She also had giardia and coccidia. Well, her momma taught her good manners because she shared everything, even with the retired cancer neighbor and her liver shunt yorkie! She was super small and Ally was 3lbs 2oz...so we had to go to a Special Pharmacy to get their meds. It takes over 2 months to get rid of ringworm. You have to have two negative results before you are in the clear. Wash, wash, wash. The spore can live everywhere. I was washing everything in bleach and vacuuming my carpet every other day. You can carry the spore around the house too. I should have had stock in bleach. Search for some other threads on ringworm. It's terrible. I cried alot. We really lost out on a lot of puppy cuddling because we really weren't suppose to touch her. I did wrap her in a blankie to carry her. She got so used to it that every time I got the blankie, she got so excited. Ally used to bring her toys and tried to get her to play thru the puppy pen. Good luck and keep your chin up. |
